Determine the Hardware IDs for Your Device

Applies To: Windows Server 2008

You can use this procedure to determine the hardware IDs for a device.

Membership in the local Administrators group, or equivalent, is the minimum required to complete this procedure.

To determine the hardware IDs for a device by using Device Manager

  1. Install the device on a test computer.

  2. Open Device Manager.

  3. Find your device in the list. It is categorized based on the type of device it is.

  4. Right-click the entry for your device, and then click Properties.

  5. In the Device Properties dialog box, click the Details tab.

  6. In the Property list, click Hardware Ids.

  7. Under Value, make note of the characters displayed. They are arranged with the most specific at the top to the most general at the bottom. You can select one or more items in the list, and then press CTRL+C to copy them to the clipboard.
