One or more servers is not responding (SharePoint Server 2010)

Applies to: SharePoint Server 2010, SharePoint Foundation 2010

Rule Name:  One or more servers is not responding.

Summary: Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 cannot detect one or more servers in the farm. These servers are managed by the farm, but do not respond.

Cause:  The servers are not running, are disconnected from the network, or are physically removed from the farm.

Resolution: Ensure that the servers are running and connected to the network, restart the SharePoint 2010 Timer service (SPTimerV4), or remove the server record from the SharePoint topology.

  • Make sure that the servers are running and connected to the network. If not, start the servers and connect them to the network.

  • If the servers are running and connected to the network, make sure that the SharePoint 2010 Timer service is started on them. If not, start the service by following these steps:

    1. From the Explanation section of the event, identify the failing servers that do not respond.

    2. Log on to each failing server and perform steps 3 - 6 to start the SharePoint 2010 Timer service on the server.

    3. Verify that the user account that is performing this procedure is a member of the Administrators group on the local computer.

    4. On the Start menu, click Administrative Tools, and then click Services.

    5. In the Services list, make sure the status of SharePoint 2010 Timer is Started. If not, double-click SharePoint 2010 Timer.

    6. In the SharePoint 2010 Timer Properties (Local Computer) dialog box, click Start.

Alternatively, you can start the SharePoint 2010 Timer service by doing the following on each server that does not respond:

    1. Verify that the user account that is performing this procedure is a member of the Administrators group on the local computer.

    2. Open the Command Prompt window, type the following command, and then press ENTER:

      net start SPTimerV4

For more information about starting the SharePoint Timer service, see SharePoint Timer service could not start (SharePoint 2010 Products).

  • If the server was intentionally removed from the farm, follow these steps to remove the record of the server from the SharePoint topology in Central Administration:

    1. Verify that the user account that is performing this procedure is a member of the Farm Administrators group.

    2. On the Central Administration Web site, in the System Settings section, click Manage servers in this farm.

    3. In the Server list, find the server that you want to remove, and then click Remove Server.

    4. In the warning message dialog box, click OK.
