Test enterprise data settings in Project Server 2010

Summary:  The third article in a series of nine articles about how to test a Microsoft Project Server 2010 deployment as an enterprise project management system administrator or solution tester. Use the series as a guide to test the functionality of a newly deployed Project Server 2010 instance. The articles in this series discuss the functionalities that are on the Server Settings page, and some initial tests that you can run to connect and check server communications by using the Project Professional 2010 client application.

Configure Enterprise Custom Field definition

The following standard custom fields cannot be deleted or renamed:

  • Cost Type

  • Health

  • RBS

  • State

  • Team Name

This scenario walks through the creation of a new custom field.

Important

You must have security permissions to administer Custom Field Definitions.

1. Open Microsoft Project Web App.

The Project Web App loads.

2. Click Server Settings.

The Server Settings page appears.

3. Click Enterprise Custom Field Definition.

    (Located in the Enterprise Data section.)

The Enterprise Custom Field Definition page appears.

4. Click the New Field button.

    Located in the Enterprise Custom Fields Section.

The New Field Web Page appears.

5. Specify the name of the field.

    Example: Project Sponsor

6. Specify the Entity or Type.

    Example: It is a project field of type text.

7. Specify the Custom attributes.

    Example: You can link the field to a lookup table, which simulates a tree-view/drop-down of the data.

    In this example, you create a text field only.

None. The radio button is selected.

8. Select Department to assign the custom field to a specific set of users in the selected department.

The department is displayed in the text box.

9. Specify the values to display.

    Example:

    To display a graphical indicator in the field, select the graphical indicator option.

    Select the Data option only.

The Data option selected.

10. Specify whether the behavior is controlled by workflow, and whether this field must have information.

The check box is selected or cleared.

The radio button for Yes or No is selected.

11. Click Save.

The field is created.

Configure Enterprise Global

Certain enterprise customizations are made in the Project Professional 2010 desktop client by checking out the Enterprise Global template. Settings made in this manner affect all users who connect to this server.

You can customize the following items in Project Professional 2010:

  • Grouping

  • Maps

  • Tables

  • Filters

  • Views

  • Reports

  • Modules

When you click the Configure Project Professional button, Project Professional 2010 opens, and the enterprise global is automatically checked out.

You cannot check whether your enterprise global configurations are correct.

Important

Permissions to modify the enterprise global.

The Project Web App loads.

2. Click Server Settings.

The Server Settings page appears.

3. Click Enterprise Global.

    (Located in the Enterprise Data section.)

4. Click the Configure Project Professional button.

Project Professional 2010 opens, and enterprise global is automatically checked out.

5. Check that the specific enterprise global configurations are correct.

Confirm that the Specific Configurations are correct.

Configure Enterprise Calendars

You can create Enterprise Calendars to track when resources are working and when they are not.

This scenario creates an IT Department Calendar that specifies that there are 24x7 working times. You can create fifteen exceptions per calendar.

1. Open Project Web App.

The Project Web App loads.

2. Click Server Settings.

The Server Settings page appears.

3. Click Enterprise Calendars.

    (Located in the Enterprise Data section.)

The Enterprise Calendars page appears.

4. Click New Calendar.

Project Professional 2010 opens, and displays the Change Working Time pane.

5. Specify a name for the new enterprise calendar.

6. Click the Exceptions tab.

Important

If you define and mark an exception, it is displayed as a non-working day.
Example: a Public Holiday
Type a name for the exception.
Example: National Public Holiday

7. Specify the start date and end date of the exception.

8. Click the Work Weeks tab.

    Click the Details tab.

Note

You can use this feature to set the working and non-working time defaults.

The details for the default appear.

9. Select the days; Sunday to Saturday.

The days are selected.

10. Click Set days to these specific working times.

Input the from and to times.

11. Click OK.

The dialog box closes.

12. Click OK.

The Working Times dialog box closes.

13. Click Save in Project Professional 2010 to save the details to the server.

The calendar details are saved to the server.

View the Resource Center

The Resource Center contains all resources for enterprise projects.

2. Click Server Settings.

The Server Settings page appears.

3. Click Resource Center.

    (Located in the Enterprise Data section.)

The Resource Center page appears.

4. Verify that the expected resources are displayed.

Confirm that the number of resources is correct.

View "About Project Server"

This web page is for information purposes. It enables you to view the number of active Project Server users and the number of Project Professional 2010 users.

The number of Project Server users is calculated by counting the number of active Project Server user accounts that have permissions to log on. The number of Project Professional 2010 users is calculated by counting the number of active Project Server user accounts that have permissions to log on and also have the permission to 'Log on to Project Server from Project Professional'.

2. Click Server Settings.

The Server Settings page appears.

3. Click About Project Server.

The About Project Server dialog box appears.
