Deploying Application Compatibility Databases for Windows 7

Updated: October 29, 2009

Applies To: Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2

Use the plan that you developed in the planning section of this guide to help you deploy the standard user environment. This section includes instructions for setting up the standard user environment in a test environment and then deploying it to users.

The Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit 5.5 (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=23302) is a suite of free applications from Microsoft that IT departments can use to create application compatibility databases. The Application Compatibility Toolkit can create application compatibility databases that allow applications to run with a requested execution level.

The procedures in this section use the following tools, which are included in the Application Compatibility Toolkit 5.5 download:

  • Standard User Analyzer. A graphical user interface tool that helps enterprise administrators identify applications that have application compatibility problems.

  • Compatibility Administrator. A graphical user interface tool that helps administrators create application compatibility databases for applications that do not run correctly on Windows 7.

  • Sdbinst.exe. A command-line tool that helps administrators install application compatibility databases for applications that do not run correctly on Windows 7.

For instructions to perform the steps required to create and deploy application compatibility databases, see the following topics:

  1. Identify Applications That Do Not Run Correctly in Windows 7

  2. Configure UAC Group Policy Settings

  3. Create an Application Compatibility Database

  4. Install or Uninstall an Application Compatibility Database

  5. Test the Application Compatibility Database

  6. Deploy an Application Compatibility Database by Using SDBInst

  7. Deploy an Application Compatibility Database by Using Group Policy
