Simple Network Management Protocol

Updated: February 3, 2010

Applies To: Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista

Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is a protocol that provides the ability to monitor and communicate status information between a variety of hosts on a heterogeneous TCP/IP–based network.

The Windows Server 2008 implementation of SNMP supports computers running TCP/IPv4 and TCP/IPv6. SNMP supports the use of IPv6 starting with Windows Vista. However, SNMP supports IPv6 only on computers running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista. This is because SNMP requires the updated protocol stack available in these operating systems for its IPv6 support.
