IAS Technical Reference

Internet Authentication Service (IAS) is the Microsoft implementation of a Remote Authentication Dial-in User Service (RADIUS) server and proxy. IAS is included in Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition; Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition; and Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition. You can configure IAS for two roles: RADIUS server and RADIUS proxy. IAS configured as a RADIUS server performs centralized connection authentication, authorization, and accounting for many types of network access, including wireless, authenticating switch, dial-up, virtual private network (VPN), and Windows Server 2003 or Microsoft Windows 2000 servers running Routing and Remote Access service. With IAS configured as a RADIUS proxy, IAS forwards authentication and accounting messages to other RADIUS servers.
