Configuring Advanced Security and Customization

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 with SP1

In addition to choosing a Windows authentication method for your extended Web sites, you need to manage user access by configuring user rights. FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions are designed to be scalable so that you can configure Web site permissions to be as simple or as complex as you need.

FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions also provides advanced customization, which Internet service providers (ISPs) and Web Presence Providers (WPPs) might find especially useful. For example, you can authenticate users separately for each extended Web site (FrontPage virtual server), which allows you to better manage anonymous user access to Web sites on separate virtual servers. In addition, you can create extended Web sites that have access to shared folders on your network by using the Universal Naming Convention (UNC) standards. Customizing FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions by using UNC network shares can be helpful if your Web server is hosting many large Web sites and subwebs.

All these advanced customizations are intended for experienced IT administrators who are familiar with Windows authentication methods and with configuring FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions.

Note

Registered WPPs for Microsoft® FrontPage® version2002 are companies that provide hosting services for FrontPage–based sites. Many WPPs also provide technical support, training and consulting, 24-hour monitoring, maintenance and traffic reporting, security management, or other Web-based services.
