RD Virtualization Host Migration: Preparing to Migrate

This topic contains instructions for preparing to migrate the RD Virtualization Host role service. It assumes that you are migrating a working deployment of RD Virtualization Host servers including dependencies.

Membership in the local Administrators group, or equivalent, on both the source and destination RD Virtualization Host servers, is the minimum required to complete this procedure. Review details about using the appropriate accounts and group memberships at Local and Domain Default Groups (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=83477).

If you are migrating more than one Remote Desktop Services role service, you should migrate the RD Virtualization Host servers after you migrate the RD Session Host servers, but before you migrate the RD Connection Broker servers or RD Web Access servers.

Important

During the migration, users will not be able to connect to any of the hosts or services managed by the RD Virtualization Host server. For the least impact on users, plan to do your migration during a period of low usage such as an evening or weekend.

Gathering data from your source server

Gather and record the following data to prepare to migrate the RD Virtualization Host role service. Add the settings to the data worksheet at RD Virtualization Host Migration: Appendix A: Migration Data Collection Worksheets.

  • Retrieve the RD Virtualization Host server name.

  • Retrieve the names of the virtual machines from the Hyper-V server.

  • Retrieve the total number of virtual machines assigned to the RD Virtualization Host server.

First, retrieve the RD Virtualization Host server name.

To retrieve the RD Virtualization Host server name

  1. Click Start, right-click Computer, and then click Properties.

  2. Under Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings, record the name of the RD Virtualization Host server on the data collection worksheet.

Next, retrieve the names of the virtual machines from the Hyper-V server.

To retrieve the names of the virtual machines from the Hyper-V server

  1. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Hyper-V Manager.

  2. Retrieve the names of the virtual machines, and record them on the data worksheet.

Finally, retrieve the total number of virtual machines assigned to the RD Virtualization Host server from Remote Desktop Connection Manager.

To retrieve the total number of virtual machines assigned to the RD Virtualization Host server

  1. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, point to Remote Desktop Services, and then click Remote Desktop Connection Manager.

  2. Click RD Virtualization Host Servers. In the middle pane, find the server name for the RD Virtualization Host server that you are migrating, retrieve the value from the Total Virtual Machines column, and record it on the data worksheet.

Preparing your destination server

Use the following steps to prepare your destination server:

  • Record the physical network cards.

  • Install Windows Server 2008 R2 by using a temporary server name.

  • Install the RD Virtualization Host role service.

First, record the physical network cards that you plan to use for Hyper-V to the data worksheet.

Note

Hyper-V requires at least one physical network adapter.

Next, install Windows Server 2008 R2.

Install Windows Server 2008 R2 on the destination server. Refer to the data migration worksheet RD Virtualization Host Migration: Appendix A: Migration Data Collection Worksheets for the temporary name of the RD Virtualization Host server.

Note

The source and destination servers must have different names during the migration of the virtual machines. The server name will be changed later in the migration process.

Finally, install the RD Virtualization Host role service.
