Distributing Device Drivers by Using SMS 2003 Packages

During the ZTI deployment process, you may need to install device drivers for target computers at the time the operating system is being deployed. Typically, device drivers are configured in Deployment Workbench and are available through the BDD 2007 distribution point. However, you may want to create multiple copies of the device drivers so that not all target computers are required to connect to the BDD 2007 distribution point. For example, you may be deploying packages to branch offices and want to provide a local copy of the device drivers for each branch office.

For ZTI, you can create an SMS 2003 package that contains the device drivers, and then distribute the SMS 2003 package to the SMS distribution points. In this way, the target computers can access the device drivers from a local SMS distribution point.

To distribute device drivers by using SMS 2003 packages

  1. Create a Separate deployment share (Network)-type deployment point by using Deployment Workbench.

For more information on creating a Separate deployment share (Network)-type deployment point by using Deployment Workbench, see “Configuring Deployment Points” in Computer Imaging System Feature Team Guide.

  2. Select one application in the Applications node in Deployment Workbench.

For more information on configuring the Applications node in Deployment Workbench, see “Adding Applications” in Computer Imaging System Feature Team Guide.

  3. Select one build in the Build nodes in Deployment Workbench.

For more information on configuring the Build node in Deployment Workbench, see “Configuring Builds” in Computer Imaging System Feature Team Guide.

  4. Use Deployment Workbench to update the deployment point created in step 1.

For more information on updating deployment points in Deployment Workbench, see “Updating Deployment Points” in Computer Imaging System Feature Team Guide.

  5. Delete the folders containing the application added in step 2 from the deployment point folder structure.

  6. Delete the folders containing the build selected in step 3 from the deployment point folder structure.

  7. Create an SMS 2003 package by using the UNC path to the deployment point share created in step 1.

For more information on managing SMS 2003 packages, see “Managing Packages” in Chapter 5, “Distributing Software” in Part 1, “Deploying SMS” in Systems Management Server 2003 Operations Guide.

  8. Configure the ResourceRoot property in CustomSettings.ini and BootStrap.ini to use the UNC path to the SMS 2003 Package created in step 7.

Set the value for the ResourceRoot property to be equal to the SMS 2003 package by using the SMSDP environment variable as the following example (where package_path is the UNC path to the package on the distribution point selected by the SMS 2003 Advanced client):

    ResourceRoot=\\%SMSDP%\package_path

For more information on the ResourceRoot property, see “ResourceRoot” in Configuration Reference.

When the target computer is installed, the BDD 2007 scripts use the SMS 2003 package on the distribution point to install device drivers on the target computer.
