Deploying System Center Virtual Machine Manager Using a VHD

This document describes how to download a pre-configured virtual hard disk (VHD), and use it to create a virtual machine. The virtual machine has a pre-installed evaluation version of System Center Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) 2007 so that you can evaluate the product's features.

All VMM components are pre-configured with default settings, including the VMM Self-Service Portal.

The VHD has all prerequisite software pre-installed, including:

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2 SP1 Trial Software (30-day version)
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP1
  • Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0
  • Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0
  • Windows Remote Management (WinRM)
  • Microsoft Core XML Services (MSXML) 6.0
  • Windows Server Internet Information Services (IIS)
  • Windows PowerShell 1.0

To download the VHD and use it to create a virtual machine running VMM

  1. Go to the VMM download site at https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=89358.

  2. Click Download to download three files to a folder named SCVMM VHD.

  3. In the SCVMM VHD folder, double-click WIN2K3R2EE_SCVMM.part1.exe to extract the VHD file and supporting files.

  4. Install Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 on a test computer, including the Virtual Server Administration Website feature, which is required to create the VM.

    Note

    If you have Virtual Server 2005 installed, you must upgrade to Virtual Server R2 SP1, including the Virtual Server Administration Website feature.

  5. Open Virtual Server Administration Website, and under Virtual Machines, click Create.

  6. In the Virtual hard disk area, click Use an existing virtual hard disk, and then in the File name (.vhd) box, type the full path of the VHD file: Win2K3R2EE_SCVMM.vhd.

  7. In the Virtual network adapter area, click the Connected to down arrow, click External Network, and then at the bottom of the page, click Create.

    Important

    You must attach a network adapter that has access to the domain network to the virtual machine before proceeding to the next step.

  8. Click the thumbnail to turn on the virtual machine, and then click the thumbnail again to remote control the virtual machine.

    Note

    Installing Virtual Machine Additions can improve the integration and performance of your virtual machine and improve many aspects of your experience, such as being able to move the pointer freely between the virtual machine window and the host operating system.

  9. Run the Windows Mini-Setup to configure settings such as the time zone and computer name.

    Important

    Your virtual machine must be joined to a domain for VMM to work successfully. You can join the virtual machine to a domain during the Windows Mini-Setup.

  10. Click Remote Control, point to Special Keys, click Send Ctrl+Alt+Delete, and then log on by using the following credentials:

    • User name: Administrator
    • Password: Evaluation1

  11. Click Start, click Run, type compmgmt.msc and then press ENTER.

  12. Add a domain user account to the local Administrators security group, and then log off.

  13. Log on to the domain using a domain account that you added to the local Administrators group in the previous step.

  14. On the desktop, double-click SCVMM Setup to run the VMM Mini-Setup Wizard.

  15. On the Information page, review the configuration settings and then click Next.

  16. On the License Terms page, read the license terms, select I accept the terms of this agreement, and then click Next.

  17. On the Progress page, you can view the results of the Mini-Setup. If the Mini-Setup was unsuccessful, the page will display errors that you can correct and then run the Mini-Setup again.

  18. On the desktop, double-click SCVMM Admin Console to open the VMM Administrator Console, and then connect to the VMM server (localhost) by using port 8100.

    Important

    After you have set up VMM, do not run VMM Mini-Setup again. It is recommended that you delete the SCVMM Setup shortcut.
