Managing Your Router

Applies To: Windows SBS 2008

If you have an UPnP certified router, Windows SBS 2008 attempts to configure it during installation and when you run some wizards. If Windows SBS 2008 cannot configure your router or if you install additional services and applications, you may need to manually configure settings on your router. Settings that you may need to configure on your router include the following:

  • Set a static IP address on the external adapter, if a static IP address is provided by your ISP.

  • Disable the DHCP Server service.

  • Open and close ports in the router firewall.

  • Enable Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) if you are using a VPN.

Although Windows SBS 2008 attempts to configure UPnP certified routers, as a security best practice, you should disable the UPnP service and then manually configure your router. This helps ensure against viruses and malicious users who might try to reconfigure ports on the server to another IP address (such as reconfiguring a client computer on the network). Before you manually configure your router, make sure that you or someone in your organization has the expertise to manage the router.
