Ensure provisioning level

After RMS is installed, the server is provisioned. During provisioning, RMS is configured and enrolled so that RMS clients can consume and publish rights-protected content. All servers in the RMS cluster must be provisioned and enrolled before moving to AD RMS. You can check the provisioning level by using the Windows RMS Administration Web site. If a server in the RMS cluster is not provisioned, you can provision it by using the following procedure.

To provision RMS

  1. Log on to a server in the RMS cluster with a user account that is a member of the local Administrators group.

  2. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Windows RMS, and then click Windows RMS Administration.

  3. Under the Provisioning and Administration heading on the Windows RMS Administration Web site, click Provision RMS on this Web site. The Provision the RMS Root Certification Server page appears.

  4. In the Configuration Database section, select the Remote database option, and then type the name of the database server in the Database server name box.

Important

You cannot upgrade an RMS cluster that is using the Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (MSDE) because remote connections are not supported with the MSDE.

  1. Ensure that the Domain account option is selected, type the user name of the RMS service account in the User name box, and then type the RMS service account password in the Password box.

  2. If you are using RMS software-based private key protection, select the Use the default software-based private key protection check box, and then type the password in the RMS private key password and Enter password again boxes.

  3. Provide the e-mail address of the RMS administrator in the Administrative contact box. This e-mail address will receive additional permission request from users who are consuming rights-protected content.

  4. Do one of the following:

    • If this server is connected to the Internet, select the Online option to automatically enroll the RMS server.

    • If the server does not have access to the Internet, you must select the Offline option, transfer the enrollment file to a computer with access to the Internet, enroll the server, and then import it back into the RMS server. For more information about RMS offline enrollment, see Check enrollment status.

    • If this server requires a proxy server to connect to the Internet, type the correct proxy information in the RMS Proxy Settings section.

  5. If your organization has a requirement for another organization to have the ability to revoke your server licensor certificate, import the public key of this organization in the Revocation section.

  6. Click Submit.
