Resolve

Media Center Extender Software

To determine how to fix this error condition, examine the error code reported in the event log message. The error code is displayed in the decimal numbers.

The event log message can report the following error codes:

  • Error Code 80070079
  • Error Code 800704d4
  • Error Code 80070002

Error Code 80070079 and Error Code 800704d4

These error codes indicate an issue with the network connectivity between the Extender and the Windows Media Center PC. Network connectivity can be impacted by outdated network card drivers on the Windows Media Center PC, faulty network equipment, or an incorrectly-configured router. You should update the Ethernet network interface controller (NIC) driver on the Windows Media Center PC, update the router firmware, and update the device firmware.

Error Code 80070002

This error code indicates a file required for setup was not found on the Windows Media Center PC. You should check for the presence of the file.

To check for the presence of the file:

  1. On the Windows Media Center PC, click Start, and then click Computer.
  2. Locate the %WINDIR%/ehome/MCX/x02/ folder.
  3. Check for the XboxMCX-V.xex file.

Note: If this file is not located in the folder, or if the folder is not present on the Windows Media Center PC, you may need to use system recovery to restore the system to an earlier time to recover the file.

Verify

You can verify that the Windows Media Center Extender software transfer was complete using the event log. If the transfer is successful, Event ID 300 with the Mcx2Svc event source will be written to the event log.

To perform this procedure, you must be a member of the local Administrators group, or you must have been delegated the appropriate authority.

To verify that Event ID 300 is being written to the event log:

  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Administrative Tools, and then click Event Viewer.
  3. If the User Account Control dialog box appears, confirm that the action it displays is what you want, and then click Continue.
  4. Expand Application and Services Logs, and then click Media Center.
  5. Look for an event with a Source named MCX2Svc and an Event ID of 300.
