Managing Licenses in Windows Server 2008 for Windows Essential Server Solutions or Windows Server 2008 without Hyper-V for Windows Essential Server Solutions

Updated: March 10, 2009

Applies To: Windows SBS 2008

Windows Server® 2008 for Windows® Essential Server Solutions (WinWESS) is for organizations that need a solution that is based on specific needs, such as simplified purchasing and licensing or best practice deployment. WinWESS includes the same version of Windows Server 2008 that Windows SBS 2008 uses, but without the added features or integrated components that are included in the Standard or Premium editions of Windows SBS 2008.

Note

The winver tool refers to Windows Server 2008 Standard FE, which is another name for WinWESS.

This document explains how to configure the client access licensing for WinWESS or for Windows Server 2008 without Hyper-V for Windows Essential Server Solutions (WinWESS without Hyper-V). You must configure the client access licensing after you complete the installation. If you do not complete this task, the server will start to shut down 30 days after installation.

Important

This document does not apply to Windows SBS 2008 Standard. It applies only to WinWESS and to WinWESS without Hyper-V.

WinWESS restrictions

Review the following restrictions before you configure client access licensing:

  • Only one computer in a domain can run WinWESS.

  • WinWESS must be the root of the Microsoft® Active Directory® Domain Services forest.

  • A WinWESS domain cannot trust any other domains.

  • A WinWESS domain cannot have any child domains.

  • WinWESS can have only 15 client access licenses (CALs).
