Setup log files

When you install Forefront TMG, Forefront TMG Setup automatically generates log files that contain detailed installation information. This topic describes the function of the Setup log files and describes how to view them.

The information in Forefront TMG Setup log files is based on Microsoft Windows Installer logging. Windows Installer writes log files containing actions and errors that occur when Forefront TMG Setup runs. You can view these log files in any text editor. The information that Windows Installer writes to these log files can help administrators troubleshoot a failed installation process. The following table summarizes the log files that are created when you install Forefront TMG.

Log file Description

ISAWRAP_NNN.log

The setup wrapper log file records general information about the success or failure of the firewall installation and about the success or failure of the Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (MSDE) installation and Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services (AD LDS).

ISAFWSV_NNN.log

The Firewall service setup log file records events and errors that are related to the configuration of the Forefront TMG installation.

ISAMSDE_NNN.log

This log file records events and errors that are related to MSDE.

ISAFWUI_NNN.log

This log file records events and errors that are related to the configuration of the Forefront TMG installation.

ISAADAM_INSTALL_NNN.log

This log file records events and errors that are related to the installation of AD LDS storage when the Configuration Storage server is installed.

ISAADAM_UNINSTALL_NNN.log

This log file records the events and errors that are related to the removal of AD LDS storage from the computer. AD LDS storage is removed when the Configuration Storage server is uninstalled from the computer.

ISAADAM_IMPORTSCHEMA_NNN.log

This log file records the successful schema changes that are automatically applied to the AD LDS storage during installation.

ISAADAM_IMPORTSCHEMAERR_NNN.log

This log file will only be created if there are errors when the automatic schema changes are applied to the AD LDS storage during setup.

Note

In the table, _NNN is a placeholder for a unique three-digit ID. Every installation attempt creates a new set of files that all have the same _NNN number. When you remove Forefront TMG, or when you run Modify or Repair Setup, a new set of log files is created that has a new and unique ID.

To view a log file, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type %windir%\temp, and then click OK.

  2. In the %windir%\temp folder, right-click the log file that you want to view, and then click Open With.

  3. In the Open With dialog box, click Notepad, and then click OK.
