Step 11 - Verify MSMQ is Empty and Stop the AD RMS Logging Service

Applies To: Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012

This step explains how to verify the Microsoft Message Queuing is emptied and stop the AD RMS Logging Service. AD RMS uses MSMQ on each server in the AD RMS cluster to send information to the logging database. This needs to be done prior to backing up the AD RMS logging database.

Note

This step is not necessary for Windows Server® 2012. Beginning with Windows Server 2012, AD RMS no longer uses or has a dependency upon the Message Queuing (MSMQ) service for logging service events using the AD RMS Logging service. Logging for AD RMS in Windows Server 2012 is now done synchronously.

To verify the MSMQ is empty

  1. Log on to ADRMS.fabrikam.com as fabrikam\Administrator.

  2. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Server Manager.

  3. On the left, expand Features, expand Message Queuing, expand Private Queues, expand drms_logging_rms_fabrikam_com_443, and select Queue messages. This will populate the middle pane with Queue messages.

  4. Verify there are no messages in Queue messages. Close Server Manager.

To stop the AD RMS Logging Service

  1. Log on to ADRMS.fabrikam.com as FABRIKAM\Administrator.

  2. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Services.

  3. On the Services screen, right-click AD RMS Logging Service, and select Stop.

  4. Close Services.
