User's Guide for System Center 2012 - Unified Installer

Updated: May 13, 2016

Applies To: System Center 2012 - Unified Installer

The User's Guide for Microsoft System Center 2012 – Unified Installer provides information about using the Unified Installer as a single installation experience for the following components:

  • System Center 2012 - Orchestrator

  • System Center 2012 – Virtual Machine Manager (VMM)

  • System Center 2012 - App Controller

  • System Center 2012 – Operations Manager

  • Microsoft System Center 2012 Configuration Manager

  • System Center 2012 – Service Manager

  • System Center 2012 – Data Protection Manager (DPM)

You run the Unified Installer to deploy Service Manager 2012 components. After you select a Service Manager 2012 component to install, the Unified Installer prompts you for the prerequisites that the component requires. Then, the Unified Installer installs the component and its prerequisites.

In this guide, two types of computers are described. One is an installer computer; the other is a target computer.

The installer computer is the computer where you run the Unified Installer; it is the computer where you run setup.exe.

The target computer is the computer where you want to install a Service Manager 2012 component. You run the Unified Installer on the installer computer to deploy Service Manager 2012 components on target computers.

The Unified Installer uses runbook technology that is in System Center 2012 - Orchestrator. Therefore, when you run the Unified Installer, you will be required to install Orchestrator. You have two options regarding where you install Orchestrator. You can either:

  • Install Orchestrator on the same computer where you are running Unified Installer

  • Install Orchestrator on a remote computer.

If you install Orchestrator on the same computer where you are running Unified Installer, that computer is considered both an installer computer and a target computer. If you install Orchestrator on a remote computer, the computer where you run Unified Installer is an installer computer and the remote computer hosting Orchestrator is a target computer.

You can run Unified Installer on a computer running Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) (the installer computer). You will need a server running Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 for Orchestrator and other Service Manager 2012 components (the target computer).

The Unified Installer must be run on the local Orchestrator server, or it must be run remotely on any computer that is not in the scope of component deployment.

To prepare an installer computer on which you are going run the Unified Installer, do the following:

  1. Edit the local computer policy for Windows Remote Management.

  2. Make sure that you have copies of the installation media for Orchestrator and for the Service Manager 2012 components that you want to install.

  3. Make sure that you have copies of the installation media for the prerequisites. For a list of prerequisites, see System Requirements for System Center 2012 - Unified Installer.

To prepare a target computer on which you are going to deploy a Service Manager component, do the following:

  1. Make sure that the account credentials you use to run the Unified Installer are also valid for a local administrator on the target computer.

  2. Edit the local computer policy for Windows Remote Management.

On both the installer and target computers, make sure that no restart is pending.

You must install only one Service Manager component per server. Unified Installer will run only on Windows 7 SP1 or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1.
