Microsoft Unified Communications Load Balancer Deployment

This page describes which Server Load Balancer partners have completed interoperability qualification testing with Office Communications Server 2007 R2 and contains pointers to accompanying deployment white papers hosted by the partner.

Overview

The qualification program for load balancers ensures that customers have seamless experiences with setup, support, and use of qualified load balancers with Office Communications Server 2007 R2, Enterprise pools and Edge Servers.

Only products that meet Office Communications Server 2007 R2 requirements will be listed.

The qualification program for our load balancer partners is defined as follows:

  • Specific requirements for interoperability with Office Communications Server 2007 R2
  • Testing scenario requirements for qualifying interoperability with Office Communications Server 2007 R2
  • Quick Start Guide  for installation and configuration requirements
  • Vendor Release Notes documenting any known issues
  • Documented support process between Microsoft and the vendor
  • Enterprise-class standards for reliability, and scalability
  • Microsoft Unified Communications (UC) specific landing page on vendor Web site

The focus of this program is designed to ensure that interoperability is tested by the vendor and reviewed by Microsoft to meet Exchange Server 2010 and Office Communications Server 2007 requirements in a consistent and supportable manner.

Usage

For qualification, Office Communications Server 2007 R2 requires integrating hardware load balancers in three deployment configurations. Hardware load balancers load balance traffic across several servers.

  • Enterprise pool with multiple front-end servers: In this scenario, the hardware load balancer will be the connectivity point to multiple front-end servers in an Enterprise pool in consolidated and expanded configuration. In the expanded configuration, the hardware load balancer also load balances traffic to the Web Components servers of the Enterprise pool.
  • Array of Directors: In this scenario, the hardware load balancer serves as the connectivity point to multiple Directors in an array.
  • Array of Edge Servers: In this scenario, if the hardware load balancer supports multiple virtual IP addresses (VIP), it will serve as the connectivity point to both the internal and external NICs for multiple Edge Servers in an array. If the hardware load balancer only supports a single VIP, then two hardware load balancers are required to load balance Edge Servers, one for the internal NICs and one for the external NICs of the Edge Server.
