Edit Property Definition Screen, Basic Properties Tab

Use the Edit Property Definition, Basic Properties tab to edit the property definitions.

Many properties can be of any data type. Properties that are limited to specific property types are described in the following table.

Use this

To do this

Property Name

Type the name for the property.

This name is the internal name for the property and the name that is displayed on the Web site as a label for this property.

After you save the property, you cannot change the property name.

Data Type

You cannot edit this box unless the data type is either Text or Long Text.

  • Select Text or Long Text from the drop-down list.

Multilingual

Select to support multiple languages in your catalog.

Property types that can have multilingual values are as follows:

  • Text

  • File Name

  • Multiple Choice

  • Long Text

Display On Site

Select to display the property to customers on the Web site. If you want to keep some properties private for internal use, do not select this check box.

By default, this option is selected for long text properties.

Specification Searchable

Select to be used in specification searches.

By default, this option is not selected for long text properties because long description text is not suited for a specification search.

Free Text Searchable

Select so that free text searching on your catalog will apply to values stored in this property.

When you select Free Text Searchable, the property definition is added to the full-text index for the catalog. You must update the full-text index after changing items in your catalogs that are marked as searchable.

Property types that can be selected for Free Text Searchable definitions are as follows:

  • Text

  • File Name

  • Multiple Choice

  • Long Text

Minimum Length

Type the number that defines the minimum length of the value for this property type.

If you specify a length other than zero, this property becomes a required property for a product or category definition.

Maximum Length

Type the number that defines the maximum length of the value for this property type.

Minimum Value

Type the number that defines the minimum value for this property type.

Property types that have maximum value are as follows:

  • Number

  • Big Number

  • Decimal

  • Date

  • Time

  • Date-Time

  • Money/Currency

    Commerce Server 2009 cannot accurately sort the Minimum Value column when the column has multiple data types. Sorting on this column may produce unexpected results.

Maximum Value

Type the number that defines the maximum value for this property type.

For example, to add a property for money, enter a number that includes the decimal point and any fractional amount that could handle the greatest monetary value to be applied to a product.

Property types that have maximum value are as follows:

  • Number

  • Big Number

  • Decimal

  • Date

  • Time

  • Date-Time

  • Money/Currency

Assign to All Product Types

Select to assign the property to all product types.

For example, you might want to select this option for generic product properties, such as name, description, or weight.

If you select this option, any definitions you create automatically inherit this property.

Store For Data Analysis

Select to export the property to the Data Warehouse.

Exporting data to the Data Warehouse makes data available for reporting purposes.

Display In Products List

Select to display this property in the list of products on the Web site.

Is Required

Select if this property must contain a value.

Currency

Select the currency for this property from the drop-down list.

The money/currency property definitions use Currency.

Default Value

Type the default value for the property type.

The format varies depending on the property type you add.

Property types that can have default values are as follows:

  • Number

  • Big Number

  • Decimal

  • Boolean

  • Text

  • Date

  • Time

  • Date-Time

  • Money/Currency

  • File Name

Display As Base Property

Select Display As Base Property to display this property on the base properties screen in the catalog.
