What Data Does DTS Import into the Data Warehouse?

You import runtime data from your Web site into the Data Warehouse by using the Data Transformation Services (DTS) tasks.

You can import the following types of data into the Data Warehouse:

  • IIS log file data

  • Profiles data

  • Catalog data

  • Orders data

  • Marketing data

  • Transaction data

The DTS tasks import data into the Data Warehouse in the following order:

  • Configuration Sync DTS task

  • Web log file data

  • Transaction data

  • Catalog data

  • Profiles data

  • Marketing (campaign) data

Use the Data Warehouse Import Wizard UI to import data into the Data Warehouse and prepare the Data Warehouse so that you can run reports.

IIS log file data

You can import IIS log file data that your site generates. This kind of data can help you analyze general user information. You obtain IIS log file data when users visit your site and click links to site pages. Some of the data in an IIS log file can include the following information:

  • The length of time a user spent visiting your site

  • The referring site from which a user accessed your site.

  • The ads users clicked while visiting your site.

  • The ads served to a user who was visiting your site.

  • The number of users to whom an ad was served.

Profiles data

Profiles data lets the analyst review the aggregated information that you gathered on your site about your customers. With profiles data, you can perform a review of a typical customer profile to help in targeting the appropriate product to the appropriate customer.

Commerce Server 2009 stores profile data in the Profiles data store. These can be based in Active Directory, SQL Server, or both. You can export data from the Profiles data store into the Data Warehouse, and then you can analyze the profile data that Commerce Server 2009 collects.

Catalogs data

Catalogs data helps you define the product and product variations available for sale, together with the functionality (aggregation, categorization, ranking, pricing, and so on) of the product.

Orders data

Orders data helps the analyst calculate orders based on customer business logic. You can use SQL Reporting Services on orders data to provide meaningful data review services for data mining. You can use orders data to determine who buys what, and therefore help your Commerce Server 2009 site to more closely target your customers.

Marketing data

Marketing data helps your marketing manager monitor the effects of discounts, ads, targeted content, and direct e-mail items.
