Locked handheld device: things it can still do

When you set a password lock on your Windows Embedded 8 Handheld device, it can help you avoid that accidental nighttime call to a friend, family member, or boss, courtesy of the pet or child who got into your things. (To learn more, take a look at Lock screen FAQ.) But just because your handheld is locked doesn't mean it's out of commission. There are lots of things it can still do.

Emergency calls

You can still make an emergency call, even if your handheld has a password lock set. From the lock screen, just flick up until you see the keypad, tap Emergency call, and then dial the emergency phone number for your locale.

To learn more, see Make and receive phone calls.

Ringer

If you don't want your handheld to ring (in case you're in a movie theater or a meeting), wake up your handheld by pressing the Power button. Then press up or down on the Volume buttons, which brings up the volume bar.

Then you can do any of the following:

  • Tap RingHandheld8 ringer ring on (or Ring + VibrateHandheld8 ringer ring on) to set your handheld to SilentHandheld8 ringer off silent (or VibrateHandheld8 ringer vibrate icon) mode. To find out more, see Ringtones, sounds, and volume.

  • Press and hold the Volume DownHandheld8 hardware icon volume down button (until the numbers in the upper-left corner reach 00) to silence the ringer.

  • Press the Power button to silence an incoming call and turn off the screen

Camera

When you need to capture that perfect moment, if you've configured your handheld to wake when the camera button is pressed, you don't need to unlock your handheld. Just press and hold the Camera button to start the camera, then take a photo or tap Video and start recording.

Music and podcasts

You don't have to unlock your handheld to pipe those tunes and podcasts into your head. Press the Power button and you can rewind, fast forward, pause, or play whatever you're listening to right from the lock screen.

Phone calls

If a phone call comes in, you can see the incoming number and decide if you want to answer it. (If it's someone you know and they're in your contact list, you'll also see their name and picture.)

  • If you want to answer the call, flick up and tap Answer.

  • If you don't want to answer the call right now, flick up and tap Ignore to send the call to voicemail.

Date, time, and appointments

You can always check the date and time on the lock screen. You can also see your next appointment at a glance when you're using your calendar as your detailed status notification—to change it, just go to Settingsphone start icon settingsLock screen, and under Choose an app to show detailed status, choose Calendar. To learn more, see Personalize my lock screen and Set up or delete an email account.

Tip

  • If you've set a reminder for your appointment, it will appear on top of the lock screen. If you want to unlock your handheld, you'll need to dismiss the reminder first.

  • If you get a notification, you can tap it before you unlock the handheld and you'll be automatically taken to the notification after you unlock your handheld.

While you were busy

If you haven't taken a call or checked your handheld for a while, take a look at the quick status notifications at the bottom of your lock screen to see what's been happening. These can show you how many new text messages, missed calls, emails, voicemails, and more have arrived since the last time you checked.

In addition, you can view a detailed status notification with a summary of a calendar event, email, text message, missed call, or other app notification. To learn more, see Personalize my lock screen.

Call, text, or note using Speech

You can use Speech to call or text a contact, or take a note with OneNote Mobile, even when your handheld is locked. To set this up, in Settingsphone start icon settings > Speech, make sure Use Speech when the phone is locked is selected. When you press the Power button to turn on your locked handheld, you can press and hold the StartPhone hardware start button button to bring up Speech, and then speak a command. Your handheld will follow the command and remain locked. To learn more, see Use Speech on my handheld device.

Note

Speech may not be available in your country or region.
