Complex Discounts Examples

Commerce Server 2002 provides the ability to apply multiple discounts to an item or an order, and also allows you to mix both item-level and order-level discounts in a single order. The following examples show the Discount Definition screens and the user baskets for multiple discounts, and both item-level and order-level discounts.

Order-level/Item-level: Buy C, get $10.00 off the total, and get A at 10 percent off

Order-level/Item-level: Buy C, get $10.00 off the total, and buy anything, Get B at 10 percent off

Order-level: Buy 2 of A, get 1 of A free

Item-level: Buy 2 of A, get 1 of A at 10 percent off

Order-level/Item-level: Buy C, get $10.00 off the total, and get A at 10 percent off

The following Discount Definition screens shows a discount that contains an order-level discount and an item-level discount.

Condition: Buy a Big Sur sleeping bag (AW200-12)

Award: Get $10.00 off the order subtotal

Discount interaction policy: None

Priority: 20

Discount Definition

Condition: Buy any product

Award: Get $10.00 off a Scoutpride cook set

Discount interaction policy: None

Priority: 10

Discount Definition screen

The following basket shows a 10 percent discount applied to the Scoutpride cook set. The conditions of the discounts are met, because the user placed the Big Sur sleeping bag in the basket. The 10 percent off award is applied to the Scoutpride cook set. The discount priority is higher (10) for the discount on the Scoutpride cook set than the priority for the $10.00 off discount on the order subtotal (20), therefore, the award is not applied to the order subtotal.

Order-level/Item-level: Buy C, get $10.00 off the total, and buy anything, Get B at 10 percent off

The following Discount Definition screens show how to create a discount that contains an order-level discount and buy anything item-level discount.

Condition: Buy a Big Sur sleeping bag (AW200-12)

Award: Get $10.00 off the order subtotal

Discount interaction policy: None

Priority: 20

Discount Definition screen

Condition: Buy anything

Award: Get 10 percent off a Wolfgang stove (AW051-14)

Discount interaction policy: None

Priority: 10

Discount Definition screen

The following basket shows a 10 percent discount applied to the Scoutpride cook set and a 10 percent discount applied to the order subtotal. When the user placed the Scoutpride cook set in the basket, the 10 percent award was applied. Because the buy anything property does not require that any item be placed in the basket as a condition, the Big Sur sleeping bag was not used as the condition for the cook set, and therefore was used as the condition to apply the $10.00 order subtotal discount.

Order-level: Buy 2 of A, get 1 of A free

The following Discount Definition screen shows you how to create a discount that awards the user a free catalog item, if they buy two of that same item. This discount scenario uses the disjoint discount property, which determines whether to reuse the condition item as an award for the discount. For information about disjoint discounts, see Disjoint Discounts.

Condition: Buy two Aptos tents (AW335-11)

Award: Get one Aptos tent free

Disjoint discount: Apply offer on both Get and Buy products.

Discount interaction policy: None

Priority: 10

Discount Definition screen

The following basket shows a free Aptos tent after the user placed two Aptos tents in the basket. The Apply offer on both Get and Buy products disjoint discount property allowed the condition item to be reused as the award for the discount. In this scenario the first tent was used as a condition, and the second tent was used as a condition, and also awarded a 100 percent discount. For information about disjoint discounts, see Disjoint Discounts.

User Basket

Item-level: Buy 2 of A, get 1 of A at 10 percent off

The following Discount Definition screen shows that if you do not use the disjoint discount property that reuses the condition item as an award (Apply offer on both Get and Buy products), the basket will not yield the desired results. For information about disjoint discounts, see Disjoint Discounts.

Condition: Buy two Starlight tents (AW425-11)

Award: Get 10 percent off one Starlight tent

Disjoint discount: Apply offer on Get product alone

Discount interaction policy: None

Priority: 10

Discount Definition screen

The following basket shows no discount in the basket for the second Starlight tent. Because the Apply offer on both Get and Buy products disjoint discount property was not selected, the condition item could not be reused as the award. In this scenario the first and second tents were used as the condition, and were not eligible for the award. For information about disjoint discounts, see Disjoint Discounts.

User Basket

The following basket shows three Starlight tents placed in the basket. A 10 percent discount was awarded to the third Starlight tent in the basket. In this scenario the first and second tents were used as a condition, and the third tent was not used as a condition and was therefore awarded the 10 percent discount.

User Basket

The following Discount Definition screen shows that if you use the disjoint discount property that reuses the condition item as an award (Apply offer on both Get and Buy products) for the same Item-level discount above (Item-level: Buy 2 of A, get 1 of A at 10 percent off), the basket will yield the desired result.

Condition: Buy two Starlight tents (AW425-11)

Award: Get 10 percent off one Starlight tent

Disjoint discount: Apply offer on both Get and Buy products

Discount interaction policy: None

Priority: 10

Discount Definition screen

The following basket shows a 10 percent discount on the second Starlight tent in the basket. The Apply offer on both Get and Buy products disjoint discount property allowed the condition item to be reused as the award for the discount. In this scenario the first and second tents were used as the condition, and the 10 percent discount award was applied to the second tent. For information about disjoint discounts, see Disjoint Discounts.
