Restarting, Ignoring, or Deleting a Failed Web Server Log Import Task

When a Web log import DTS task fails, you can analyze what caused the task to fail, and determine whether to restart the task, ignore it, or delete it.

Restarting the task

  1. In Enterprise Manager, open the DTS package, right-click Web server log import task, and then click Properties.
  2. In the Import Web Server Logs dialog box, click the Restart Details tab. Only imports that have failed are listed.
  3. On the Restart Details tab, do one of the following:
    • Click Resume to allow the incomplete log import task to continue. No other log import can be run until this operation is complete.

  • If new log files are added to the log file folder during the period between the time the log import fails, and the time you click Resume, then the new log files are imported when the failed import resumes.

  • To resume the failed import without importing additional log files, after clicking Resume, on the Log Files Locations tab, click Log Files, and then clear the new log files.

  • Click Ignore to delete the failed log import task and continue with a new log import task. If you select this option, you will not be able to restart the failed log import task.

All previous status messages of incomplete log imports are deleted.

  • Wait. If you do not select Ignore or Resume, the failed import log will continue to retry until the maximum number of retries is reached. After retrying the task, the Retry exhaust action is implemented: stop the import at the end of retries or delete the problem log import and continue. (You configure this action in the Advanced Web Log Import Properties dialog box, on the Restart tab.)

  1. If you select Ignore, then in the Import Web Server Logs dialog box, click Log Files to view the failed log files along with the other log files in the folder.
  2. Select the failed log files you still want to import, or clear them if you do not want to import them.
  3. Click OK.
  4. Re-run the Web server log import task.

  • In Step 4, if you click Log Files first, the failed log files will not appear in the dialog box. However, when you click Ignore, the failed log files are added to the import job.

Ignoring or deleting the task

If you click Ignore in the Log restart properties dialog box, or if you select Delete and Continue after the task has been restarted the maximum number of times, you cannot restart the previous log import job. The following occurs:

  • The previous log import is ignored, and Commerce Server continues with a new log import job.

  • All previous status messages of incomplete log imports are deleted.

  • The number of requests, visits, hits, and other data are restored as though the failed import never occurred.

  • The open user visit data might not be restored; this data might be lost.

For example, the number of open visits is 10. You run the Web log import task, but it fails, so you delete it. Commerce Server restores old user, visit, request, and hit data to its state before you ran the Web log import task. Open visits, however, are not restored. Both the old and new open visit data might be deleted.

The next time you run the Web log import task, the number of visits might not be accurate because the open user visits were deleted.
