Monitoring Production Servers

It is recommended that you use a separate server that is not part of the run-time services to monitor the production servers in your Web farm. It is important to monitor your servers from a separate server because you do not want the process of monitoring to affect the performance or operation of a production server. If you use a separate server, you will get a more accurate measurement of the true performance of your production servers.

In addition, monitoring user traffic should take place on a separate administrative network—separate from the network that handles the actual data processing traffic. System Monitor, as well as other monitoring tools, can aggregate the data from many servers into one collective view with this process. It also reduces the disk input/output (I/O) on the Web and database servers, which is necessary to log this information.
