Running Direct Mailer in Stand-alone Mode

The stand-alone mode of Direct Mailer facilitates it as a platform component that can be easily integrated with line-of-business systems. For example, advertisers prefer that Commerce Server analysis reports be mailed to them. This use ignores any communication from the application to the Direct Mailer. For example, Direct Mailer can mail a file containing an Ad Placement report to a list of advertisers. The job information in this case comes from command line parameters and a configuration file.

To run Direct Mailer from the command line interface you use the executable file, DmlRun, together with command line options. You can use these options to perform several tasks, such as to create, run, monitor, and delete Direct Mailer jobs.

  • To schedule direct mail campaigns, you either use the Campaign Manager module in Business Desk or use the Windows Task Scheduler manually. The Windows Task Scheduler can run a batch file that uses the command line interface.

The following is an overview of the steps required to set up and run Direct Mailer in stand-alone mode:

  1. Develop the content to be delivered to the recipients. If necessary, develop the Web page or static file that will provide the personalized message body.

  2. Identify the data source for the list of recipients.

  3. Create the Direct Mailer job file.

  4. Create the Direct Mailer job by using the /create option from the command line interface.
