Import Options Dialog Box

Use this dialog box to select the site for which you want to import data, and select the type of data to import into the Data Warehouse for that site.

The following table describes each of the import options:

Import option Description
Web server logs Imports Web log file data generated by your Web site. Web log file data is obtained when users visit your site and click links to site pages. Some of the data imported into the Data Warehouse from a Web log file includes, for example:
  • The length of time a user spent visiting your site
  • The referring site from which a user accessed your site.
  • The ads users clicked while visiting your site.
  • The ads served to a user who was visiting your site.
  • The number of users to whom an ad was served.

  • The Web log files must be in the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) extended Web log file format. If you are importing Apache or Lotus logs, you must convert them to the W3C extended Web log file format before you can import them.

For a list of Commerce Server reports based on Web server log file data, see Reports Based on Web Log File Data.

Resolve IP addresses Converts IP addresses, imported from your log files, into domain names. For example, 198.105.232.4 becomes www.microsoft.com. This helps readers of your reports more easily understand the data in the reports.
Product catalog Imports data about the products in your Commerce Server catalog database, including dimensional information such as product name, description, color, and size.

For reports such as Product Analysis and Transaction Analysis to display properly, catalog data is required. If catalog data is not imported into the Data Warehouse, products are identified in reports by their stock-keeping unit (SKU) numbers only.

To designate which catalog properties to import into the Data Warehouse, use the Catalog Definition Designer module in Commerce Server Business Desk. For more information, see Specifying Data to be Imported into the Data Warehouse.

Transactions Imports transaction data, which includes purchase orders and requisition numbers. This data is used in analysis reports to determine how well individual products are selling, how much is being requisitioned, or how much your users are purchasing.
Profiles Imports profile data such as user name, address, and date registered.

To designate which profile properties to import into the Data Warehouse, use the Profile Definition Designer module in Business Desk. For more information, see Specifying Data to be Imported into the Data Warehouse.

Campaigns Imports campaign information such as advertisers, campaigns, and campaign item data. For a list and description of reports based on campaign data, see Advertising Reports.

Each of these import options corresponds to a Commerce Server Data Transformation Services (DTS) task. If you want, you can manually configure each of these DTS tasks instead of using the Data Warehouse Import Wizard. For more information, see Importing Data into the Data Warehouse.

For a detailed list of the data that is imported for each of these options, see Extract, Transform, and Load Process for DTS Tasks.
