Data Warehouse Configurator

Use the Data Warehouse Configurator to create a new Data Warehouse. It never configures an existing Data Warehouse.

To start the Data Warehouse Configurator

  • Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Commerce Server 2002, and then click Data Warehouse Configurator.

After you complete the Commerce Server Data Warehouse Configurator dialog box, the Data Warehouse Configurator performs the following steps:

  1. Installs the Data Warehouse and Predictor global resources.
  2. Creates a SQL Server database. By default, this database is named <Commerce Server site name>_dw.
  3. Creates an OLAP database. By default, this database is named <Commerce Server site name>_dw.
  4. Unpacks the dw.pup package, which contains a version of the Commerce Server Business Desk application that only includes the Analysis modules. The default name of the Business Desk application is <Commerce Server site name>bizdesk.

The following table shows the options available in the Data Warehouse Configurator dialog box.

Use this To do this
Commerce Server site Type the name of the site to be created, or select the name of an existing site from the drop-down list. This is the site that the new Data Warehouse will support.
Data Warehouse Type the name of the Data Warehouse global resource to be created. This resource will point to the <Commerce Server site name>_dw Data Warehouse database, or the name of the database you specify in Database Server box.

Do not use the name of an existing Data Warehouse global resource.

  • If you select an existing site in the Commerce Server site box, and then type the name of a new Data Warehouse global resource in this box, the Data Warehouse Configurator will assign this new Data Warehouse resource to that site, replacing any other Data Warehouse global resource that may have existed.
Non-Commerce applications Click Configure to add non-Commerce applications and Web servers to be processed by the new Data Warehouse.
Reporting Server Click Configure to select the Web server that contains the Business Desk application. This is the computer that will run reports for Business Desk users.
Database Server Click Configure to select the SQL Server that contains the Data Warehouse database, and (optionally) specify the name of the database. If you do not specify a name for the database, the name will default to <Commerce Server site name>_dw.

In the Data Link Properties dialog box, provide the login information that will configure two connection strings: ConnStr_db_analysis and ConnStr_db_dw.

For information about these connection strings, see Data Warehouse Connection Strings.

Analysis Server Click Configure to select the name of the SQL Server on which Analysis Services is installed, and (optionally) specify the name of the OLAP database. If you do not specify a name for the database, the name will default to <Commerce Server site name>_dw.

In the Data Link Properties dialog box, provide the login information that will configure two connection strings: ConnStr_OLAP and ConnStr_OLAP_Client.

For information about these connection strings, see Data Warehouse Connection Strings.
