How to: View Objects in a Data Source View Using Data Source View Designer

You can locate and view objects in Business Intelligence Development Studio using several different features of Business Intelligence Development Studio.

To automatically arrange objects in a diagram

  1. In Business Intelligence Development Studio, open the project or connect to the database that contains the data source view in which you want to arrange objects.

  2. In Solution Explorer, expand the Data Source Views folder, then open the data source view in Data Source View Designer by doing one of the following:

    • Double-click the data source view.
    • Right-click the data source view and click Open.
    • Click the data source view and then on the View menu, click Open.
  3. In the Diagram Organizer pane, click the diagram in which you wish to automatically arrange objects and then do one of the following:

    • On the Format menu, point to Auto Layout and then click Diagram.
    • Right-click an open area in the Diagram pane and click Arrange Tables.
  4. Save the modified data source view by doing one of the following:

    • On the File menu, click Save Selected Items or Save All.
    • On the Data Source View Designer toolbar, click Save Selected Items or Save All.
    • Close the Data Source View Designer in Business Intelligence Development Studio and then click Save when prompted.

To change the layout in a diagram

  1. In the Diagram Organizer pane in Business Intelligence Development Studio, click the diagram in which you wish to change the layout.

  2. Right-click an open area in the Diagram pane and then click Switch to Diagonal Layout.

  3. To switch back to the default layout, right-click an open area in the Diagram pane and then click Switch to Rectangular Layout.

To find tables, views, and named queries in a diagram using the Tables pane

  1. In the Diagram Organizer pane in Business Intelligence Development Studio, click the diagram in which you wish to find a table, view or named query.

  2. In the Tables pane, click the table, view or named query that you wish to locate in the Diagram pane.

    The table, view or named query you selected is centered in the Diagram pane and appears as the selected object in the Diagram pane.

Note

You must select a table, view or named query that exists in the selected diagram.

To find tables, views, and named queries in a diagram using the Table Locator

  1. In the Diagram Organizer pane in Business Intelligence Development Studio, click the diagram in which you wish to find a table, view, or named query.

  2. Click and then drag the Table Locator thumbnail view of the tables, views and named queries in the diagram.

    The table locator is located at the intersection of the vertical and horizontal scroll bars in the lower right corner of the Diagram pane. The table locator opens a thumbnail representation of the current diagram in the Diagram pane. You can use this thumbnail to change the view in the Diagram pane to any location on the diagram.

  3. Continue dragging until the location you want appears in the Diagram pane.

To find tables, views, and named queries in a diagram using the Find Table dialog box

  1. In the Diagram Organizer pane in Business Intelligence Development Studio, click the diagram in which you wish to find a table, view, or named query.

  2. Open the Find Table dialog box by doing one of the following:

    • Right-click on open area in the Diagram pane and click Find Table.
    • Click Find Table on the Data Source View Designer toolbar.
    • Click Find Table on the Data Source View menu.

    The Find Table dialog box lists all the tables in the current diagram.

  3. Select the table you want to find and click OK.

    You can type strings and wildcard characters in the Filter box to view subsets of the tables in the diagram. For more information about the Find Table dialog box, see Find Table Dialog Box (Data Source View Designer) (SSAS).

    After you click OK, the table, view or named query you selected is centered in the Diagram pane and appears as the selected object in the Diagram pane.

To change the resolution of the objects in a diagram

  1. In the Diagram Organizer pane in Business Intelligence Development Studio, click the diagram in which you wish to find a table, view or named query.

  2. On the Data Source View Designer toolbar and do one of the following:

    • Click the Zoom icon one or more times to cycle the resolution of the objects in the Diagram pane from 10% to 200%.
    • Click the down arrow to the right of the Zoom icon and then select the desired resolution.

    At the smaller resolutions, only table objects and relationships are shown. At larger resolutions, columns within table objects are displayed.
