Copy Database Wizard (Select a Source Server)

Use this page to specify the server that has the database to move or copy, and to enter login information. After you select the authentication method and enter login information, click Next to establish the connection to the source server. This connection remains open throughout the copy or move session. To use the Copy Database Wizard, you must establish a connection to both the source and destination servers by using a login that is a member of the sysadmin fixed server role. The databases to transfer must have a compatibility level of version70, version80, or version90.

Options

  • Source server
    Enter the name of the server or server instance on which the database or databases that you want to move or copy are located, or click the browse (...) button to locate the server you want. The server must be SQL Server 2000, SQL Server 2005, or SQL Server 2005 Express Edition.
  • Use Windows Authentication
    Let a user connect through a Microsoft Windows user account.
  • Use SQL Server Authentication
    Let a user connect by providing a SQL Server Authentication user name and password.
  • User name
    Enter the user name to connect with. This option is available only if you have selected to connect by using SQL Server Authentication.
  • Password
    Enter the password for the login. This option is available only if you have selected to connect by using SQL Server Authentication.
  • Next
    Click to connect to the source server and perform the following validations:

    • The source server is SQL Server 2000,, or SQL Server 2005 Express Edition.
    • The user is a member of the sysadmin fixed server role.
