How to: Set the Service Startup Account for Full-Text Search (SQL Server Configuration Manager)

This topic describes how to set the service account for the Microsoft SQL Server Full-Text Search service, MSFTESQL, using the SQL Server Configuration Manager.

Important

For the Full-Text Search service account, we strongly recommend using a low-privileged domain user account with only User rights and permissions on the local computer. Also, to ensure you are running the service with the lowest possible privileges, each instance of Full-Text Search should have a dedicated service account. For security considerations, do not use LOCAL SYSTEM, LOCAL SERVICE, or NETWORK SERVICE as the service account to run MSFTESQL. This could provide an elevation of privileges for the Full-Text Search service.

To set the service startup account for Full-Text Search

  1. On the Start menu, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft SQL Server 2005, point to Configuration Tools, and then click SQL Server Configuration Manager.

  2. In SQL Server Configuration Manager, click SQL Server 2005 Services, right-click SQL Server FullText Search (<instance name>), and then click Properties.

  3. On the Log On tab of the SQL Server FullText Search (<instance name>) Properties dialog box, select This account, enter the Microsoft Windows Account Name that Full-Text Search will use, enter the password for this account in the Password box, and then re-enter it in the Confirm password box. Click Browse to search for a user or group.

  4. Click Restart to restart the Full-Text Search service.

    Note

    You must restart the Full-Text Search service before these configuration changes take effect.
