Notes

  • To open DHCP, click Start, click Settings, click Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click DHCP.

  • DHCP clients running Windows 2000, Windows XP, or a Windows Server 2003 operating system explicitly request that the DHCP server update only the pointer (PTR) resource records that are used in DNS for the reverse lookup and resolution of the IP address of the client to the name of the client. These clients update their address (A) resource records for themselves.

  • Clients running earlier versions of Windows cannot make an explicit request for DNS dynamic update protocol preference. For these clients, the DHCP service updates both the PTR and the A resource records.

Information about functional differences

  • Your server might function differently based on the version and edition of the operating system that is installed, your account permissions, and your menu settings. For more information, see Viewing Help on the Web.
