IP phones

Microsoft tests and qualifies IP phones for Lync through the Compatible Devices Program. The Compatible Devices Program currently qualifies devices for Lync client on Windows-based machines. For clients that are not Windows-based, Microsoft recommends that you evaluate the USB consumer product lines offered by the device manufacturers that are part of the Compatible Devices Program. IP phones can also be used in environments that are not Windows-based, excluding the PC pairing functionalities.

Note: It is important to ensure that both the IP phone and the firmware version are tested and qualified for Lync (reference the following table). If phone vendors offer a firmware version that is newer than the qualified version, it is not supported by Microsoft and should be used for beta/evaluation purposes only. It is recommended that you visit each vendor's website for the latest information about product specifications, country support, and documentation including release notes and known issues.

About "Optimized for Lync" devices

USB audio and video devices are tested and qualified for Lync through the Compatible Devices Program. USB desk phones and handsets, personal speakerphones, corded and wireless headsets, and HD webcams Optimized for Microsoft Lync are tested to provide the following:

Lync User Experience

  • Plug and play: once connected, a device registers on Lync server and is ready to use
  • First run experience: Automatic detection of a device with a direct link to user guide and other useful tools and documentation
  • Mute/unmute across PC and device
  • Audio quality (embedded in the device): no echo or excessive glitches, echo cancellation across devices, wideband / Microsoft media platform with RT audio
  • Anti-flicker support for webcams (global powerline frequency) admin experience

Administrator Experience

  • TSANet: Device makers and Microsoft participate in common support infrastructure (TSANet) for rapid resolution of support tickets
  • Firmware and fixes remote software update and contractual SLA for hardware updates
  • Lync test specifications and tools

All peripherals Optimized for Lync work with Lync 2013, Lync Online, Lync Server 2010, and Office Communications Server 2007 R2.

Lync Room Systems

Lync Room Systems are designed to extend the Lync meeting experience to the conference room. A Lync Room System includes all the required hardware and Lync Room System Edition software. The hardware includes, at a minimum, one or two large touch-enabled displays, high definition video cameras and microphones, and a console in the conference room that enables participation without a laptop or desktop from within the meeting room.  These products have been tested and are Optimized for Lync.

Microsoft tests and qualifies meeting room solutions for Lync under the Unified Communications Open Interoperability Program (UCOIP) and Compatible Devices Program.  Meeting room solutions Optimized for Lync offer high-quality audio and video and reduce the need to set up and troubleshoot equipment.

Video Solutions Qualified for Lync

Microsoft tests and qualifies video teleconference systems (VTCs), multipoint control unit (MCUs) or conferencing bridges, and gateways for interoperability with Lync through our Video Interoperability Program. Our Video Interoperability program tests:

  • Video endpoints enable direct registration as an end point on Office Communications Server 2007 R2 and Lync Server.
  • Video infrastructure to enable multipoint video conference bridge with Lync users and enable standards based VTCs to connect via a gateway.
