Configuring a Computer for Access Control Troubleshooting

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP2

Before you can use advanced troubleshooting techniques to identify and fix access control problems, you need to configure your computer for troubleshooting. In addition, you need a basic understanding of troubleshooting concepts, procedures, and tools.

To configure your computer for troubleshooting access control, you can install Xcacls.exe.

Install Xcacls.exe

The Xcacls command-line tool sets all file-system security options that are accessible in Windows Explorer. Xcacls does this by displaying and modifying the access control lists (ACLs) of files.

The tool is part of the Windows 2000 Resource Kit Tools. To download the Xcacls tool, see Free Tool Downloads on the Microsoft Web site (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=18748).
