Meet the Microsoft Team

We're a diverse team with a number of different areas of focus and personalities. Below you'll find out who we are and what we do. Feel free to drop us an e-mail (contact links are available on our blogs) or catch up with us at one of the local developer events.

Evangelism Team
The evangelism team have technical responsibilities for driving awareness, usage and demand for Microsoft developer tools. Each member has a slightly different focus, which you'll find out about below.

 

Scott WylieDirector, Developer & Platform Strategy Team RSS Icon
Scott WylieScott leads the Developer and Platform Strategy Group in NZ. Basically that means working with the great team below to excite customers and communities about Microsoft’s new and emerging technologies. He’s an old hand at Microsoft NZ and previously was the NZ practice manager for Microsoft Services. Prior to Microsoft he worked in Australia, the UK and the US in a variety of ISV and corporate environments – having started his career in the early 80’s as an IBM 370 assembler programmer! After hours he can be found playing with his band ‘ President Gas’ and spending time with his family.

 

Nigel ParkerUX Development Advisor RSS Icon
Nigel ParkerNigel Parker is a Developer Advisor for Microsoft New Zealand in Auckland. Nigel has an entrepreneurial background and has numerous successful “start-ups” under his belt. Nigel leverages his experience to spend time working with Independent Software Vendors in New Zealand; aiding them with the early adoption of Microsoft Technologies. One of Nigel’s other focuses is on supporting companies that are hosting solutions and doing business on the web.
Darryl BurlingDevelopment Advisor RSS Icon
Darryl BurlingDarryl is a Developer Advisor for Microsoft New Zealand in Wellington and works with both ISV (independent software vendors) and the community. His experience includes development of infrastructure management solutions, websites and mobile applications in addition to infrastructure architecture, consulting, design, implementation and support in a wide range of technologies. Even after hours Darryl is often found geeking out with technology, however, he also enjoys spending time with his wife and three daughters and participating in his local church.
Nathan MercerIT Pro Advisor RSS Icon
Nathan MercerNathan has been working with Microsoft-based networks since the "good ol' days" of Windows NT 3.x, and has been with Microsoft New Zealand since 2000 as a Systems Engineer, Technology Specialist and now as an IT Pro Technology Advisor. He is responsible for making sure New Zealand’s IT Pro’s are fully briefed on infrastructure-related Microsoft software, including Active Directory, security, systems management, Windows Vista and Windows Server codename "Longhorn". A long-time and well-known contributor to the NZ.comp IT community newsgroup, Nathan’s previous jobs have included consulting for the finance sector in Wellington, focusing on systems management, and being a *nix administrator for an ISP. He was a Microsoft Certified Trainer (MCT) for Clustering, and currently holds both an MCSE and the CISSP security qualification. When not working, Nathan can be found listening to electronic music, skydiving, or mountain biking.
Mike ZeffDevelopment Advisor – ISV RSS Icon
Mike ZeffMike is a Development Advisor working with Independent Software Vendors to help them adopt Microsoft’s latest technologies in their own products and services. In his 17 years in the IT industry, Mike has worked with a range of technologies including various flavours of Unix, Mac OS/X and Windows since version 3.1 as well as a wide range of development languages and tools. Outside of work Mike loves flying (when finances, family and free time allow), photography and writing code for fun.
Mark CarrollArchitect Advisor
Mark CarrollMark is the Architect Advisor in the team and holds a New Zealand Institute of Management (NZIM) Diploma of Business Management and a Bachelor of Business Studies (BBS) degree majoring in Management. His technology selection and architectural approaches are focused on understanding the mix of business drivers affecting their suitability for a particular organisation and applying those through Enterprise Architectures that have a strong business architecture focus. He enjoys employing those skills with a variety of customers and communities within New Zealand.
Ryan TarakAcademic Developer Advisor RSS Icon
Ryan TarakRyan is the Academic Developer Advisor and his focus is on demonstrating the latest Microsoft development technology and platform to IT students in universities and technical institutes across the country. Ryan is a recent graduate from the University of Auckland in Computer Systems Engineering. In his spare time Ryan likes designing web pages and also enjoys working in the garden and going on road trips with snacks. Ryan has a special connection with fried chicken and regularly shares his passion with the team during lunch.

 

Audience Marketing Team
The marketing and sales team are those of us who have revenue responsibilities for driving sales and adoption of our developer tools. We each have slightly different focuses, which you'll find out about below.

 

Dean EdwardsGroup Marketing Manager
Dean EdwardsDean joined Microsoft in 2006 as the Marketing Manager for the Developer and Platform Strategy Group, with overall responsibility for marketing and communications to the local technical community. Prior to working for Microsoft, Dean’s experience was in the telecommunications industry, where he worked in product development and product management across consumer and small business segments. Outside of the office, Dean can be found spending time with his family and trying to keep his ½ acre property under control. He is also a keen (if infrequent) golfer and avid armchair sports lover.
Paul LoAudience Marketing RSS Icon
Paul LoPaul is a graduate of Marketing & Psychology from the University of Auckland and started as an intern at Microsoft NZ 3 years ago. Paul now works closely with the evangelists in the team to deliver broad marketing initiatives and campaigns for a number of technical audiences within New Zealand. In particular, Paul works closely with IT students and faculties to enable them to understand and adopt Microsoft technologies and is responsible for student initiatives including Imagine Cup and MSDN Academic Alliance. Also, Paul is working with NZ designers to better understand Microsoft’s new Expression technologies. Outside of work, Paul is a hobbyist film maker, enjoys cooking for friends and a flight simulator enthusiast.
Robert CostelloGroup Operations Manager
Robert CostelloRobert has joined the team as our Operations Manager. His focus is on ensuring that the team can be as effective in their roles as possible. Robert’s career history is diversified and has included management, personal fitness training and banking. In his spare time, Robert enjoys the New Zealand outdoors, swimming and playing piano.
Daryl OhhAudience Marketing Intern
daryl ohh Daryl is the newest member to the DPE team at Microsoft New Zealand. A recent graduate from Auckland University, he is passionate about marketing and doing "good business!". Daryl's role includes event management and academic marketing. Daryl also has had experience in music marketing working at Parachute Music. "I really enjoy music. I'd like to combine music and IT, and see where that takes me. The changing landscape of the music industry means a shift in consumer behaviour. I see new opportunities!
