Host: Guy (Microsoft)
Q: Do you expect to provide a Revised/updated Release Notes for SBS 2003 anytime soon?
A: We are working on an update to SBS, but it's too soon to detail out plans. We are a couple of months away
Host: Mir (Microsoft)
Q: Do you expect to provide a Revised/updated Release Notes for SBS 2003 anytime soon?
A: You can find the Webrelnotes for SBS 2003 on our Web site. The Webrelnotes are the latest version of the SBS 2003 relnotes.
Host: Ray (Microsoft)
Q: My SBS 2003 is having problems replicating with Std 2003 server? any ideas on how to fix other than restarting the replication service
A: What errors are you getting? Does it ever work? Did you make sure both servers have the same system time?
Host: Wil (Microsoft)
Q: I'm doing an inplace upgrade from small business server 2000, is it possible to rename the domain when we upgrade? We would like it to be renamed to kassiopeia.local instead of kassiopeia.
A: This is not possible due to limitations in Exchange and WS
Host: Guy (Microsoft)
Q: Customer still haven't received the 5 CALS license from Microsoft which apparently ran out of stock. Any news on this?
A: Please use the sbscalad@microsoft.com alias to enquire about you're order.
Host: Dana (Microsoft)
Q: Is it possible to mount an offline Exchange 2000 Information Store (previous backup) into Exch 2003/SBS 2003, or to provide a path for recovery of historical data without a fully independent recovery server running Exch 2K?
A: Yes, this is possible. Assuming the databases are in a "clean shutdown" state, they should mount when moving them into the Exchange 2003 Mdbdata folder. Just bring over the 4 database files and not the log files, etc.
Host: Klaus (Microsoft)
Q: My SBS 2003 is having problems replicating with Std 2003 server? any ideas on how to fix other than restarting the replication service
A: If the ntfrs data is out of sync because ntfrs was down for a longer period of time on one of the domain controllers here's how to restore it: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315457
Host: Dana (Microsoft)
Q: Have two sbs2k3 pro boxes that exhibit intermittent mail stuck in queue - categorizer and advanced queuing. Can’t find any KBs on this
A: Do you have any SPAM or Antivirus plug-ins running for Exchange? Specifically, are they intercepting mail before it reaches Exchange?
Host: Guy (Microsoft)
Q: Where is explicit documentation on setting up a computer that will have many users with a Device CAL?
A: The best place o look for licensing answers is http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/sbs/techinfo/overview/generalfaq.mspx
Host: Alan (Microsoft)
Q: What's the easiest way to expose SharePoint services to outside requests? (SBS 2003 Premium w/ ISA)
A: We are currently working on a white paper that describes the ways available to do this (server and web publishing). It should be posted to Microsoft.com soon. For now, check out http://msmvps.com/bradley/posts/896.aspx although this is not official
Host: Mir (Microsoft)
Q: Can you recommend any articles on going from 5.5 data to exchange 2003 Std?
A: You can use the "Exchange Migration Wizard" to move Exchange 5.5 mailboxes to Exchange 2003 STD.
Host: Sean (Microsoft)
Q: What is required to build a companyweb on one sbs2003 box and bring it to another? My thought is that I could build a quick demo site for a client, once it is fixed move it to their box.
A: This is possible via the stsadm tool. in Program Files\common files\microsoft shared\web server extensions\60\bin. Use the command line stsadm -o backup -.... to backup your test site, then take the backup file to the new server and use the stsadm -o restore -.... More information on the backup command is located in the SBS help about backing up and restoring SharePoint
Host: Jason (Microsoft)
Q: Is the MAPPS SBS disk Upgradeable down the road or is it locked like the MSDN?
A: The Microsoft Action pack is Not-for-distribution (NFD) software and should be fine for upgrade to Full Packaged Product (FPP).
Host: Dana (Microsoft)
Q: What is the recommended way of moving a customer from SBS 4.5 to SBS 2003, same server? I am thinking it would be easiest to just sell them new drives and install SBS 2003 on the new HD's and then migrate their data like Exchange etc. over to the new SBS.
A: You are essentially correct, Richard. You must perform a migration in any case. Please refer to http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/sbs/upgrade/default.mspx for more information on the migration whitepapers we have available.
Host: Ray (Microsoft)
Q: Have a windows 2000 adv server running exchange 2000 advanced. Is it possible to remove this system from its current domain, join a SBS 2003 domain, and attach the mailboxes to the new SBS 2003 user accounts?
A: Your Windows 2000 Advanced probably belongs to a different domain other than the SBS. Thus that Exchange will have a different Site and Administrative Group name. The easy way to move the data is to use Exmerge rather than joining the Windows 2000 Adva
Host: Renee (Microsoft)
Q: How do I make my SBS2003 server accessible from the internet to get my email, check documents and share some files for collaboration. I have a fixed IP address on my router.
A: In the Server Manager, in the To Do List, click on the link "Connect to the Internet" and complete the Configure Email and Internet Wizard (CEICW). For the Broadband connection choose the Router option. The CEICW will assist you with setting up the Internet connection, the firewall, and allow you to expose Outlook Web Access, the Remote Web Workplace, SharePoint and other web services.
Host: Alan (Microsoft)
Q: How do I make my SBS2003 server accessible from the internet to get my email, check documents and share some files for collaboration. I have a fixed IP address on my router.
A: Use the Configure E-mail and Internet Connection Wizard in the Server Management console to select to publish Remote Web Workplace, Outlook Web Access and Windows SharePoint Services. Then, you can either navigate to https://<external IP of router>/remote or https://<external domain>/remote to get started.
Host: Leszek (Microsoft)
Q: Is it possible to add a 'Logout" on OMA so two users can share one phone?
A: Unfortunately no. It is the phone that caches the credentials. There is currently no way to force the phone to clear them. Some phones will clear credentials if you drop the connection, others if you turn them off, but there is no clear standard.
Host: Kim (Microsoft)
Q: Is there a way to block attachments of a particular type native to Exchange / SBS 2003?
A: If you run through the CEICW and select to configure Exchange there will be an option to block attachments. =You can define types there.
Host: Sean (Microsoft)
Q: Are there plans to add more native support for alternative backup methods like dvd [even though that's a bit small] and sub hard drives "to of the box"... large tape backups are expensive.
A: For the next release of SBS, we are looking a reducing the size of the backup set as well as enabling DVD media as a backup destination
Host: Mir (Microsoft)
Q: Is there an equivalent procedure to Q294430 (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;294430) for SBS2003 to migrate the exchange datastore from SBS4.5 without using exmerge?
A: You can use the following white paper as an alternate method. It involves running the Exchange Migration wizard instead of Exmerge: http://download.microsoft.com/download/6/f/a/6fa5ebc5-5a0f-4990-8833-ed24f4da4289/SBS_MigratingSBS45.doc
Host: Jason (Microsoft)
Q: Are there any tools to migrate Active directory to a file, clean it up change the domain name and then import back into 2003?
A: Our migration path for Active Directory from server to server is using the ADMT v2 tool described in http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=16414.This process actually requires the domain name on the destination server to be different than the .source domain. To answer your specific question, their is not a tool to export AD to a flat file and manipulate this file for import on a new DC for the new domain.
Host: Klaus (Microsoft)
Q: I attempted to load BCM on windows XP box with Outlook2k3 with patch and could not get profile with BMC to stick. Took off outlook 2k3, added Office2K3 Pro from MAP
A: Couple of checks: Your XP box needs to be joined to the SBS network wizard before your the BCM patch. If your BCM extensions don't show up, try manually adding them to your profile: edit profile, click on New Outlook Data
Host: Renee (Microsoft)
Q: I have an existing Windows 2000 network w/DC & TS in application mode, want to replace W2K DC with NEW Dell server with W2K3 SBS, how do I migrate settings & data and will the existing TS work?
A: Yes, you can migrate using the migration white paper located here: http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsServer2003/sbs/upgrade/default.mspxYou can disjoin the peer DC from the current domain and move it to the new SBS 2003 domain and leave it a peer DC, which will preserve the Terminal Server licensing. A Windows 2000 or 2003 Terminal Server running in Application Mode is supported in an SBS 2003 environment.
Host: Kim (Microsoft)
Q: In SBS 4.5 the Proxy did not allow easy redirection to the OWA, I understand that ISA handles this differently. The ISP is blocking port 80, is there a paper on the redirect to another port?
A: In 2003 OWA is published on port 443. Are they blocking that as well?
Host: Dana (Microsoft)
Q: We implemented a SBS 2003 install with a cisco firewall in place, where we port forwarded port 80 to the sbs 2003, but now can not get OWA to work; works internally but not externally?
A: The first thing to make sure you do is to open port 443 for SSL in the firewall as well, as SBS 2003 creates a certificate for SSL. Note that you don't have to specify https when connecting to the OWA URL, as we have an ISAPI filter that redirects the traffic to port 443 for SSL.
Host: Mir (Microsoft)
Q: I asked a question at the beginning of the session about moving from Windows 2003 (Enterprise) trial to SBS 2003. I am not sure if someone has an answer to this question.
A: Migrating from Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition to SBS 2003 is .currently not supported. You can migrate from Win2k Pro, Win2003 STD, SBS 4.5 and SBS 2000.
Host: Klaus (Microsoft)
Q: I restarted the replication service on both domain controllers
A: Check out this KB article; http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;272279
Host: David (Microsoft)
Q: Will modem sharing ever come back? Miss it from 2K
A: There is currently no plan in bringing Modem Sharing back into the product.
Host: Mir (Microsoft)
Q: I have an existing Windows 2000 network w/DC & TS in application mode, want to replace W2K DC with NEW Dell server with W2K3 SBS, how do I migrate settings & data and will the existing TS work?
A: You can use the following white paper to migrate from your W2K DC to the new Dell Server with SBS 2003: http://download.microsoft.com/download/6/d/c/6dccf9b4-d915-4c95-b5af-100b89e02add/SBS_MigratingSBS2k.doc. TS in App Sharing mode is not supported in SBS 2003.
Host: Ray (Microsoft)
Q: I thought the Exchange Migration wizard simply automated exmerge. Or does it do something different and maintain single instance storage?
A: Exchange Migration Wizard will not maintain single instance storage, similar to Exmerge. For more information, please take a look at KB 328871.328871 HOW TO: Use the Exchange Migration Wizard to Migrate Mailboxes From an Exchange Organization
Host: Dana (Microsoft)
Q: If you have a firewalled SBS2k3 how can you open ports to allow specific traffic through to a workstation, e.g. SIP for a softphone?
A: The best way to do this would be to server publish the ports to the specific client, or as mentioned we have articles on publishing netmeeting, etc.
Host: Renee (Microsoft)
Q: I have an existing Windows 2000 network w/DC & TS in application mode, want to replace W2K DC with NEW Dell server with W2K3 SBS, how do I migrate settings & data and will the existing TS work?
A: Yes. You can migrate using the white paper located here: http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsServer2003/sbs/upgrade/default.mspx. Both Windows 2000 and 2003 servers running TS in app mode are supported
Host: Dana (Microsoft)
Q: Follow-up: thanks Dana_MS -- port 443 for sbs 2003 owa worked....how can I get a valid certificate installed.
A: You would need to contact a public certificate provider such as Verisign, etc. The main thing, though, is to provide the encryption via SSL.
Host: Guy (Microsoft)
Q: Licensing: Does the Administrator account, and other system service accounts such as Postmaster, BackupExec, sysadmin type accounts all consume a CAL each?
A: No, CALs are consumed by either users or devices, and that's you're choice. .Accounts aren't users, although they could be at times.
Host: Sean (Microsoft)
Q: Any plans for backup methods via net to offsite locations with confirmation methods. I find that SBS clients forget to change media, etc. Also many biz insurance policies now have wording that if no confirmed backup methods they will not payout.
A: The Small Business Server team does not currently plan to provide an online backup strategy.
Host: Jason (Microsoft)
Q: What would be the best resources to someone who would like to use Active Directory, but has never before used it, nor implemented it. (With SBS 2003 MSAPPS or FPP) If possible, walkthrough's and *clear* information would be quite helpful.
A: Take a look at the following @ http://www.microsoft.com/portugal/windowsserver2003/adam/default.mspx,
http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver/en/library/e3d396dd-c141-432b-9e69-50f597061e471033.mspx?mfr=true, Also take a look at the following seminars regarding AD (with real-time demos) @ http://www.microsoft.com/Seminar/MMCFeed/MMCDisplay.asp?Lang=en&Product=103373 (this is a list of Windows Server 2003 seminars so you will have to scroll through the list)
Host: Mir (Microsoft)
Q: We are thinking about installing Microsoft CRM 1.2 on our SBS 2003 box (when we set it up), and I read somewhere that this might cause a problem with SharePoint. Do you know of any issues between the two?
A: I'd suggest reading the following KB: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;831747
Host: Dana (Microsoft)
Q: Is there any why to prevent user from forcing off a logged in user on local box when using RWW - I blew off my wife on my lab network - she lost her shopping list and I am in big trouble.
A: When connecting to a Windows XP Pro client via remote desktop, you are logging onto the console session. There is no way around this, as the XP Pro client doesn't support multiple user logons via remote desktop like Terminal server does.
Host: Guy (Microsoft)
Q: Is there somewhere to get complete licensing information for 2003SBS and what is required? Are there is inherent licenses on any OSs?
A: The best resource to answer you're licensing questions is the Licensing FAQ at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/sbs/techinfo/overview/generalfaq.mspx
Host: Bill (Microsoft)
Q: Are there webcasts on SharePoint, SharePoint customizations and other "how tos" to take more advantage of this feature?
A: I don't know of any chats or how-tos. What are you looking for?
Host: Ray (Microsoft)
Q: Looked at Q328871, thanks. It doesn't mention anything about preserving custom forms but since it doesn't preserve rules I suspect they are lost as well. If you can confirm, great but I'll just assume that they are not transferred.
A: Correct. They will not be migrated.
Host: Alan (Microsoft)
Q: How can I access RWW on SBS Network 2, while sitting on a desktop behind ISA on Network 1?
A: The SBS Network 2 should be configured properly once you're run CEICW. On Network 1, you'll need to create an access rule to allow outbound TCP access on port 4125 for the RWW remote desktop functionality.
Host: Guy (Microsoft)
Q: Licensing: If you have a computer with a device CAL and then many users use that single computer does each one of the users need a user CAL too?
A: No if you have chosen device CALs then that's it.
Host: Kim (Microsoft)
Q: Are there webcasts on SharePoint, SharePoint customizations and other "how tos" to take more advantage of this feature?
A: Check out: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;830230 from November 6, 2003
Host: Mir (Microsoft)
Q: We are thinking about installing Microsoft CRM 1.2 on our SBS 2003 box (when we set it up), and I read somewhere that this might cause a problem with SharePoint. Do you know of any issues between the two?
A: Besides reading the following KB: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;831747, chapter 15 of the CRM Getting Started guide has great info about installing CRM on Bobcat.
Host: Leszek (Microsoft)
Q: Is there anything on SBS IIS that needs Anonymous Access enabled? (OWA, OMA, SharePoint)
A: No. Except if you enable form (cookie) based logons (for OWA etc). For form based logons, IIS is set to anonymous and the form/filter does the authentication handling.
Host: Renee (Microsoft)
Q: What are recommendations for SMB (5-10 users) that have apps and need to use TS..but can not afford another license/hardware ...can sbs 2003 and TS in app mode exist & work well for 2-4 users ...whitepaper or resource about SBS 2003 and TS?
A: Terminal Server will not run in Application mode on SBS 2003. The alternatives are to run a second server with Windows 2000 or 2003 in Application mode. Or, if all the clients are XP machines then they can use Remote Web Workplace, which would be perfect for 2-4 users. Here is the documentation on setting up a TS server in an SBS2k3 environment - http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/sbs/techinfo/administration/default.mspx
Host: Guy (Microsoft)
Q: Ref Device CAL - Could you please write a KB point concerning the how-to of setting up a Device CAL? I'm blowed (Brit slang) if I can find anything specific
A: Why don't you email me specific questions to guyhay@microsoft.com
Host: Mir (Microsoft)
Q: Can you recommend any books out there about setting up SBS 2003?
A: You can start with the SBS 2003 Quick Start Poster and the Getting Started guide.
Host: Dana (Microsoft)
Q: Is there an alternate to MSDOS Net Send?
A: Well, the one thing I'm aware of is to go into Computer Management, then Shared Folders, then Sessions. You can send a message to everyone under sessions from here.
Host: Alan (Microsoft)
Q: Is there any why to prevent user from forcing off a logged in user on local box when using RWW - I blew off my wife on my lab network - she lost her shopping list and I am in big trouble.
A: This is the default behavior of remote desktop - other users can boot the first user off in some situations. You should be prompted that you're about to boot someone though - look for this message when you're logging on. In SBS we allow all Remote Desktop Users to log on to all clients - but you could lock this down using policy and restrict who can log on to that computer remotely - if you want to be heavy handed. :)
Host: Sean (Microsoft)
Q: Any plans to put a VOIP setup for say, 10 clients into SBS 20XX, so server can also be PBX ?
A: SBS has no current plans to add VOIP (Voice over IP) software to the SBS package
Host: Alan (Microsoft)
Q: Is there a limit for how many users who can use the web workplace at the same time?
A: There is no artificial limit imposed by the software. You will need CALs for all your users. The true limiting factor we often see in small business is the upload bandwidth of your Internet connection - each RWW remote desktop connection is going to use up some of that bandwidth.
Host: Dana (Microsoft)
Q: Is this dependant on any settings in SBS? I liked the Net Send
A: No, there are no settings you need to make to send to users in Computer Management. As for net send, it is still available to use, of course. :)
Host: Sean (Microsoft)
Q: I currently the old server has a RAID5 SCSI array. For the new server I am going to move the array over and am thinking of ordering it with dual SATA drives in a mirror configuration to use as the boot/OS partition. Anyone see any issues with .this?
A: We have not seen any problem with mirrored drives as the OS partition on SBS 2003
Moderator: Jana (Microsoft)
Q: I am Installing SBS2003 into an existing Linux/Unix (server side) network. I would like to know how to integrate the Linux Samba shares with SBS2003 as I previous did with Server 2000. CIFS is throwing me off, and SFU is unacceptable, due to the inherent security issues of NIS and the slowness of NFS. Suggestions?
A: Sorry for the delayed response. I need more information about the integration level you have with 2000. What specific security concern you are referring to with NIS? Are you using Windows Services for Unix 3.5?
Host: Dana (Microsoft)
Q: My Net Send isn't working from the server, that's why I asked.
A: Do you get an error when trying to use net send? For example, from the server can you type "net send administrator test message"?
Host: Guy (Microsoft)
Q: Recently Cisco mentioned joint projects with SBS product development...is that something MS sees on SBS 2003 or future deployment platform?
A: HW firewalls are very common in the SB space. MS is agnostic on choosing between SBS with 1NIC and SBS with 2 NICs. It really depends on what the customer has already. That said we are always looking at ways to increase the value to SB customers.
Host: Dana (Microsoft)
Q: That seemed to work. If I try to send to users, it errors.
A: What is the error? :p
