Include Unsearchable Items in the Search Results

Applies to: Office 365 for enterprises, Live@edu

Unsearchable items are items that can't be indexed for a mailbox search. This includes unrecognized message types and messages that contain attachments that are encrypted or have an unrecognized format.

When you select the Include items that can't be searchedcheck box, all unsearchable items are included in the search results. They aren't compared against the keyword query for the search. Because relatively few items are unsearchable, including these won't significantly increase the number of search results.

Unsearchable items are placed in a folder named Unsearchable Items in the mailbox where the search results are stored. This folder is located directly under the folder for the user mailbox. Unsearchable items are located in this folder in the original folder location from the user's mailbox. All other search results for the user are located in folders below the Unsearchable Items folder. This keeps searchable and unsearchable items separate, while maintaining the original folder structure from the user's mailbox.

For more information about the file types that are indexed for search and the file types that are unsearchable, see Files Types Indexed and Excluded for Multi-Mailbox Search.
