Event Review: UNIX and Microsoft Windows Server 2003: Migration and Interoperability (Session TNT1-118)
Welcome to the material supporting page for this session. The materials on this page have been selected as the best matches to the content covered in the live event session.
Session Outline
The ability to integrate with different systems in a heterogeneous environment is a key feature of Microsoft Windows Server 2003. This session looks at Service for UNIX (SFU) 3.5 as a key enabler to both integrate Windows with UNIX and also migrate applications to take advantage of the Windows platform. It starts with a look at key integration and migration questions, and then move on to an overview of SFU 3.5 and how it can be used to answer these questions. The session then considers the features in SFU 3.5 and how they work. Starting with interoperability, it covers Network File System (NFS) from the client side to allow clients to access UNIX files, and using a server as a gateway to allow Windows clients to access UNIX files as if they were on a Windows File Server. It also covers the migration features of SFU 3.5, looking at the shell interface, libraries, and tools available to port UNIX applications to run under Windows Server 2003 with only recompilation.

| Demo: Installing Microsoft Services for UNIX 3.5
This demonstration installs Microsoft Services for UNIX 3.5 onto the domain controller SYD-DCSFU-01. You will cover how to start the installation, select components individually during custom installation, modify Microsoft Windows security settings to be more compatible with UNIX, configure individual components such as NFS Server and NIS Server, and complete the installation and reboot the virtual PC. Download |
| Demo: Administering User Name Mapping
In this demonstration, you will show how to grant other hosts on the network access to the User Name Mapping Server. You will also show how to stop and start the server, and synchronize its contents. Download |
| Demo: Synchronizing Passwords between Windows and UNIX
In this demonstration you will set up Password Synchronization on both Windows and UNIX, then change a password on one server, and observe that the other server is updated. The first task can always be shown. The second and third tasks require AUC-ORC-01 be present and can be omitted as optional. Download |
| Demo: Administering NFS Server
In this demonstration you will administer the NFS Server component of Services for UNIX, both from the Services for UNIX Administration tool and from the command line. Download |
| Demo: Sharing a Windows Folder Through NFS
In this demonstration you will share an existing folder using NFS Server so that it is available to NFS clients. Download |
| Demo: Mounting an NFS Shared Folder
In this demonstration you will mount a shared folder using the NFS client component of Services for UNIX. The second task requires AUC-ORC-01 and is optional. Download |
| Demo: (Optional) Using SFU as a Gateway to NFS
In this demonstration you will mount a shared folder using the NFS gateway component of Services for UNIX, then connect to it from a Windows client machine. This entire demo requires AUC-ORC-01 and is optional. Download |
| Demo: Navigating the SFU Korn Shell
In this demonstration you will show compatibility between the UNIX Korn shell and the Korn shell provided with Services for UNIX, in the area of interactive features. Download |
| Demo: Migrating a Korn Shell Script to Interix
In this demonstration you will show compatibility between the UNIX Korn shell and the Korn shell provided with Services for UNIX, in the area of shell scripting. Download |
| Demo: Migrating a UNIX Perl Script to Interix
In this demonstration you will show how to migrate a Perl script to Services for UNIX. Download |
| Demo: Migrating a cron Table (crontab) to Interix
In this demonstration you will show compatibility between the Windows Cron Service provided in Services for UNIX, and cron tables used in UNIX. Download |
| Demo: Migrating a Compiled Application to Interix
In this demonstration you will show compatibility between the development tools provided in Services for UNIX and those found in UNIX by compiling and executing a simple C program under Interix. Download |
| Demo: Deploying a Ported Application Through .NET
In this demonstration you will show how Services for UNIX can extend the functionality of a migrated UNIX application by "wrapping" it for use in the .NET environment, then deploying it as a Web service. Download |
