Event Review: How to migrate your NT 4.0 Directory Services to Windows Server 2003 Active Directory (Session TNT1-99)

In migrating from Windows NT 4.0 to Active Directory, organizations can either upgrade in-place (keep the same domain architecture) or restructure the domain architecture. This session addresses how to make the best choice and how to plan a migration from Windows NT 4.0 directory services to Active Directory. We'll discuss the differences between upgrading and restructuring your Windows NT 4.0 directory services and the implications of each approach. We’ll also describe various migration scenarios and demonstrate the migration tools.

Session Agenda

  • Differences between upgrading and restructuring your NT 4.0 directory services
  • Implications of upgrading and restructuring
  • Supported migration scenarios
  • How to use domain migration tools

Demo: Setting up the Migration

In this first demonstration, we will prepare the Windows Server 2003 and NT 4.0 environment to support the migration. We will see what trusts are required, what permissions are needed, and how to set up the required auditing on both environments as well as the groups, registry keys, and the password migration agents.

Demo: Migrating Users

In this demonstration, we will migrate the call center users over from the account domain into a new OU. The demonstration will show how to create the group mapping database and how to apply that mapping to the resources in the resource domain.

Demo: Security Translation

In this demonstration, we will look at populating the mappings database and then use the security translation to ensure that the permissions on the target machine are updated. We will then look at that the results of the translation before using the report wizard to show how to get reports on the migration.
