Step 9: Test the Enviroment

In this section we will run through a series of tests to showcase the Outlook Add-in functionality. For the purpose of this testing please remember that when we are doing an Outlook 2010 test we are logged on to CLIENT1 as CORP\bsimon (Britta Simon). For doing the Outlook 2007 tests we are logged on to CLIENT2 as CORP\ljacobson.

Please remember that the entry point for joining groups in the steps below is not the only entry point. The following are a list of entry points for accessing group information, using join as an example, that are provided by the Outlook Add-in for Outlook 2010 and Outlook 2007.

  • On the Outlook 2010 ribbon click Groups, and then click Join.

  • Right-click an e-mail from a group in the Mail Explorer view, select Groups, then click Join Group.

  • In an e-mail, on the Outlook 2010 ribbon, in Groups, click Join Group.

  • In an e-mail, select your name in the To:, From:, or CC: fields, right-click and select Groups, and then click Join Group.

  • On the Outlook 2007 toolbar click Groups, and then click Join Group.

  • Click Action, select Groups, and then click Join Group.

  • Right-click an e-mail from a group in the Mail Explorer view, select Groups, then click Join Group.

  • In an e-mail, on the Outlook 2007 ribbon, in Groups, click Join Group.

  • In an e-mail, select your name in the To:, From:, or CC: fields, right-click and select Additional Actions, and then click Join Group.

Requesting to Join a Group using Outlook 2010

In this step, we will use the FIM 2010 R2 Add-in for Outlook to request to join a group.

To request to join a group using Outlook 2010

  1. Log on to CLIENT1 as CORP\bsimon

  2. Click Start, select All Programs, select Microsoft Office, and click Microsoft Outlook 2010.

  3. On the Outlook 2010 ribbon click Groups, and then click Join. This will bring up an email addressed to the FIM Service with a Request to Join Group subject.

    Note

    The preconfigured e-mail is addressed to FIM Service. This delivers the request to the mailbox that is monitored by the FIM Service. Based on policies defined in the FIM Service, FIM 2010 R2 will send mail to the group’s owner, Lola Jacobson.

  4. Click Join. This will bring up a list of groups. Select the Marketing Announcements group, and click Join. Click OK.

  5. To submit the request, click Send.

Requesting to Join a Group using Outlook 2007

In this procedure, we will use the FIM 2010 R2 Add-in for Outlook to request to join a group from Outlook 2007.

To request to join a group using Outlook 2007

  1. Log on to CLIENT2 as CORP\ljacobson

  2. Click Start, select All Programs, select Microsoft Office, and click Microsoft Outlook 2010.

    Important

    As this is the first time Lola is logging on to CLIENT2, she will need to setup Outlook 2007. Click Next and follow the prompts to get here connected with Outlook and Exchange.

  3. On the Outlook 2007 toolbar click Groups, and then click Join Group. This will bring up an email addressed to the FIM Service with a Request to Join Group subject.

  4. After selecting one of the above entry points, in the Request to Join Group e-mail, click Join.

  5. Select the Marketing Communications Review group, and click Join.

    Note

    To find groups in the list, type the first letters of the group to search for in the Search box.

  6. Click OK.

  7. To submit the request, click Send.

Adding a User to a Group using Outlook 2010

In this step, use the FIM 2010 R2 Add-in for Outlook to add a user to a group.

To add a user to a group using Outlook 2010

  1. On CLIENT1, on the Outlook 2010 ribbon click Add Members. This will bring up an email addressed to the FIM Service with a Request to Add Members to Group subject.

  2. Click Add, select Lola Jacobson and click Add.

  3. Click OK.

  4. Click Join, Select the Marketing Strategy Discussion group, and click Groups.

  5. Click OK.

  6. To submit the request, click Send.

  7. Wait a few moments and you will see an Forefront Identity Manager service response message in Britta’s Inbox.

Adding a User to a Group using Outlook 2007

In this step, use the FIM 2010 R2 Add-in for Outlook to add a user to a group using Outlook 2007.

To add a user to a group using Outlook 2007

  1. On CLIENT2, on the Outlook 2007 toolbar click Add Members to Group, and then click Join Group. This will bring up an email addressed to the FIM Service with a Request to Add Members to Group subject.

  2. Click Add, select IT Discussion and click Add.

  3. Click OK.

  4. Click Join, Select the Marketing Announcements group, and click Groups.

  5. Click OK.

  6. To submit the request, click Send.

Approving a Group Join Request using Outlook 2010

In this step, use the FIM 2010 R2 Add-in for Outlook to approve a request from someone requesting to join a group that you own.

To approve a group join request using Outlook 2010

  1. On CLIENT1, in Britta Simon’s Inbox find the email sent from the FIM Service with a subject of Pending approval: Lola Jacobson request regarding Marketing Communications Review.

  2. Click Approve, this will open an email to the FIM Service, click Send.

In this step, use the FIM 2010 R2 Add-in for Outlook to approve a request from someone requesting to join a group that you own.

  1. On CLIENT2, in Lola Jacobson’s Inbox find the email sent from the FIM Service with a subject of Pending approval: Britta Simon request regarding Marketing Announcements.

  2. Click Approve, this will open an email to the FIM Service, click Send.

In this step, use the FIM 2010 R2 Add-in for Outlook to remove yourself from a group.

  2. Click Remove, select Britta Simon and click Add.

  3. Click OK.
