How to: Navigate with the Table of Contents

In the Contents window, you can use a table of contents (TOC) to navigate to information. The table of contents is an expandable list containing all of the topics in the Help collections.

Note

The scope of topics available in the TOC depends on the filter you have selected. For more information, see Help Filters for Visual Studio.

Use the following procedure to navigate through nodes in the TOC.

To navigate through TOC nodes

  1. On the Help menu, choose Contents.

  2. Expand a node by clicking the plus sign (+) to the left of the node.

  3. Select one of the topics to view the document contents.

    –or–

Use the arrow keys to expand TOC nodes when moving vertically through the TOC and then press ENTER to display a topic.

  4. Collapse a node by clicking the minus sign (-) to the left of the node.

For accessibility information about navigating through the TOC, see Contents Window Shortcut Keys.

Filter the TOC

Filters narrow the scope of topics included in the Contents and Index windows. Only filters for the current Help collection appear in the list and not all Help collections offer filters. If you choose to apply a filter in the Contents window, the same filter is automatically applied to the Index window. For more information, see Help Filters for Visual Studio.

To filter the TOC

  1. On the Help menu, choose Contents.

  2. In the Contents window, choose a filter from Filtered by.

    Note

If filters are not available, that means the current Help collection does not offer filtering.

Synchronize a topic with the TOC

If you have opened a topic using the index or full-text search features, you can determine where this topic is in the TOC by synchronizing the TOC with the document window.

  1. View a topic.

  2. Click the Sync with Table of Contents button, which is shown in the following screen shot.
