Report Builder Window (Getting Started Pane)

Use the Getting Started pane to create a new report or open an existing report. After you click OK or open a report, the Getting Started pane closes. To display the Getting Started pane again, click New on the File menu. If you create a new report or open an existing report while a report is displayed in the design area, you will be prompted to save the current report.

New

  • Select a site or server
    Click the hyperlink to switch to another report server or SharePoint site. By default, the URL for the last report server or SharePoint site that you accessed is always displayed. When you click the hyperlink, the Open dialog box appears.

  • Select a source of data for your report.
    Select the data source that you want to use to create your report. Listed are all the data sources available to you in the current location. Only one data source can be selected.

    If there are no data sources displayed in this area, navigate to another report server or SharePoint site or contact the person who set up the instance of Report Builder that you are using. At least one source of data must be available for you to create a report.

  • Show path
    Select to display the folder path used to access the data source on the report server or document library.

  • Description
    Read a description of the selected data source. If the person who created the data source wrote a brief description of the data source, it is displayed below the Description section. A description can help you determine if a data source contains the data that you want to use.

  • Report Layout
    Select the report layout type that you want to use to structure your report. Select Table to create a report that has dynamic rows. Select Matrix to create a report that has dynamic rows and columns. Select Chart to create a report that displays the data as a graphical representation.

Open

  • Open from a site or server
    Click to open a report that was previously saved to a report server or SharePoint site. When you click this option, the Open dialog box appears.

  • Open from File
    Click to open a report that was previously saved to the local computer.

  • Help
    Click to open the Report Builder Help file.
