Use MapPoint smart tags in Microsoft Word or Excel

Note  Smart tags work only in the English versions of Microsoft Word 2002 and Microsoft Excel 2002.

Smart tags are a Word and Excel feature that automatically recognizes text or data as being of a certain type. The MapPoint smart tags recognize data as being a place or address and allow you to use the smart tags feature to quickly access functionality in MapPoint. When you install MapPoint, the MapPoint smart tags are available for use in Word and Excel.

When smart tags recognize text or data as being an address or place, in Word the text is underlined in purple and in Excel the cell in which the data appears has a purple triangle in the lower-right corner. When you place your mouse pointer over this text, the Smart Tag button appears. Click the arrow on the button to then select from the available actions on the list.

Notes

Smart tags work independently of the MapPoint Office COM add-in but have similar functionality. When data in your Excel spreadsheet contains multiple addresses, it may be more convenient to work with the MapPoint Office COM add-in because you can export or link multiple cells to MapPoint.

Before copying information from Excel, make sure that your data is properly formatted.

How?

MapPoint smart tags also work in Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.5 and higher when displaying a Web page saved from a Word document. When saving your Word document, make sure that the smart tags are saved as XML properties.

For more information about using smart tags, click Microsoft Word Help on the Word Help menu or Microsoft Excel Help on the Excel Help menu.
