Troubleshoot working with other programs

The data I exported to Excel has more or less information than I expected.

Selecting an area or shape at a high altitude could result in unreliable export data. It is possible that the two-dimensional shape will extend beyond the three-dimensional curvature of the Earth that is rendered on the map. To avoid this problem, try the following:

Select the shape, and on the View menu, point to Zoom, and then click To Selection.

Use the Select tool to zoom to the lowest possible altitude that shows the data you want to export, and then select the area that includes that data.

Data that does not appear entirely within the selected area or shape may or may not be exported. Every mapped data point has a centroid—a point representing the center of the geographic area to which the data is mapped—that is affected by the map projection and elevation. If the centroid for a particular data point is within the selected area or shape, the data is exported, and if not, the data is not exported. For some data, you may have better results creating a more precise shape, such as a freeform shape, surrounding the data subset that you want to export.

When I copy a map to another document, I can't get the map that I want.

Try any combination of the following ways to change the size or dimension of the map window before you copy the map:

Show or hide toolbars.

How?

Show or hide task panes.

How?

Resize panes in the MapPoint window.

How?

Change the size of the MapPoint program window by clicking the Restore Down button in the upper-right corner of the program window, and then changing the window's dimensions by dragging its borders.

Change the map view by panning and zooming before you copy the map.

How?

Select an area of the map before you copy the map.

I can't find the MapPoint toolbar button or menu items in my Office program.

The MapPoint Office COM add-in is available only in following Office programs:

Microsoft Excel 2000 or Excel 2002

Microsoft Outlook 2000 or Outlook 2002

Microsoft PowerPoint 2000 or PowerPoint 2002

Microsoft Publisher 2002

Microsoft Visio 2002

Microsoft Word 2000 or Word 2002

If the MapPoint toolbar button or menu items don't appear in one of the programs listed above, the MapPoint Office COM add-in may have been unloaded or removed for that program.

Start the Office program and open the COM Addins dialog box.

To open the COM Addins dialog box

  1. On the Tools menu, click Customize.
  2. On the Commands tab in the Customize dialog box, click Tools in the Categories list.
  3. Drag the COM Add-ins button to your toolbar.
  4. Close the Customize dialog box.
  5. Click the COM Add-ins button to open the COM Addins dialog box.

Check the list of available add-ins and do one of the following:

If available, select the Microsoft MapPoint Add-in check box, and then click OK.

If the Microsoft Office COM add-in does not appear, reinstall the add-in.

When I try to send a map file by e-mail, an unexpected e-mail program opens.

This behavior can occur if Microsoft Internet Explorer is not configured to use your preferred e-mail program. To resolve this issue, configure Internet Explorer to use your preferred e-mail program.

  1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Internet or Internet Options, and then click the Programs tab.
  3. In the Mail box, click the e-mail program you want to use, and then click OK.
  4. Close Control Panel, and then restart your computer.

I can't send a picture of the map by e-mail.

The Send To Mail Recipient (as Picture) entry on the File menu is available only with Microsoft Outlook.

If you have an e-mail program other than Microsoft Outlook and you want to send a picture of the map to someone who doesn't have MapPoint, you can do one of the following:

Copy the map to your e-mail message.

How to copy a picture of the whole map?

How to copy a selected area of the map?

Save the map as a Web page, and then send the Web page and accompanying graphics as an attachment.

How?

If the person to whom you want to send a picture of the map has MapPoint, you can send the map file as an attachment.
