Exchange Server 2003 Data and Active Directory

Before you review the detail of Exchange-related permissions in Active Directory® directory service, it is important that you understand the general relationship between Microsoft® Exchange data and Active Directory.

In Active Directory, data storage is partitioned into three logical segments called naming contexts. Each naming context replicates its changes separately among those domain controllers in the forest that store copies (replicas) of the same naming contexts:

  • Schema naming context

  • Configuration naming context

  • Domain naming context

You can view these naming contexts and their contents with the ADSI Edit MMC snap-in. The ADSI Edit MMC snap-in is installed with the Windows Support Tools. You can launch the Windows Support Tools Setup by double-clicking the Suptools.msi file in the \Support\Tools directory on the Windows Server™ 2003 CD.
