Exchange binary file version is newer than installed version of Exchange Server

[This topic is intended to address a specific issue called out by the Exchange Server Analyzer Tool. You should apply it only to systems that have had the Exchange Server Analyzer Tool run against them and are experiencing that specific issue. The Exchange Server Analyzer Tool, available as a free download, remotely collects configuration data from each server in the topology and automatically analyzes the data. The resulting report details important configuration issues, potential problems, and nondefault product settings. By following these recommendations, you can achieve better performance, scalability, reliability, and uptime. The Microsoft® Exchange Server Analyzer Tool queries the CIM_Datafile Microsoft Windows® Management Instrumentation (WMI) class to determine the value of the Version key for several core Exchange binary files:

  • Exres.dll

  • Gapi32.dll (checked in both the System32 folder and the \Exchsrvr\bin folder)

  • Mapi32.dll (checked in both the System32 folder and the \Exchsrvr\bin folder)

  • Mapisp32.dll

  • Mapistub.dll

  • Cdo.dll

  • DavEx.dll

  • DSAccess.dll

  • EmsMta.exe

  • Epoxy.dll

  • Ese.dll

  • Eseutil.exe

  • ExCdo.dll

  • ExchMem.dll

  • ExMime.dll

  • ExOleDb.dll

  • ExPop3.dll

  • ExSmtp.dll

  • Mad.exe

  • Mbdsz.dll

  • OabGen.dll

  • PhatCat.dll

  • Phatq.dll

  • Reapi.dll

  • ReSvc.dll

  • Store.exe

If the Exchange Server Analyzer finds the Version value for any of the files to be more than the Exchange Server Version value, a warning is displayed. A later version number indicates that a file is newer than what was expected. This can occur if a hotfix was installed.

To resolve this warning

  1. There is no action that needs to be taken. The warning only indicates the presence of newer files, which are probably the result of the installation of a hotfix or other update.
