Sender Filtering Enabled

[This topic is intended to address a specific issue called out by the Exchange Server Analyzer Tool. You should apply it only to systems that have had the Exchange Server Analyzer Tool run against them and are experiencing that specific issue. The Microsoft® Exchange Server Analyzer Tool queries the Active Directory® directory service to determine whether the msExchServerBindingsTurflist property of a Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) virtual server object indicates that sender filtering is enabled for an SMTP virtual server instance.

The Exchange Server Analyzer also queries Active Directory to determine whether the msExchTurfListNames or msExchTurfListOptions properties indicate that sender filtering is also enabled at the global settings level.

The Exchange Server Analyzer displays a warning if the following conditions are true:

  • Sender filtering is enabled at the SMTP virtual server instance.
  • Sender filtering is enabled at the global settings level.

This warning indicates that sender filtering is effectively enabled. Sender filtering is generally not an issue unless you are troubleshooting mail flow problems with this particular server. If this is the case, you may want to verify the filter configuration or temporarily disable sender filtering to determine whether it is incorrectly blocking legitimate mail from valid senders.

To disable a sender filter on an SMTP virtual server
  1. Start Exchange System Manager: Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft Exchange, and then click System Manager.

  2. In the console tree, expand Servers, expand the server that you want, expand Protocols, and then expand SMTP.

  3. Right-click the SMTP virtual server on which you want to disable the filter, and then click Properties.

  4. In <SMTP Virtual Server> Properties, on the General tab, click Advanced.

  5. In Advanced, select the IP address for which you want to disable the filter, and then click Edit.

  6. In Identification, clear the Apply Sender Filter check box to disable the filter.

  7. If you have multiple virtual servers, repeat Steps 3 through 6 for each virtual server on which you want to disable the filter.
