Cannot identify the specified Exchange gateway

[This topic is intended to address a specific issue called out by the Exchange Server Analyzer Tool. You should apply it only to systems that have had the Exchange Server Analyzer Tool run against them and are experiencing that specific issue. The Exchange Server Analyzer Tool, available as a free download, remotely collects configuration data from each server in the topology and automatically analyzes the data. The resulting report details important configuration issues, potential problems, and nondefault product settings. By following these recommendations, you can achieve better performance, scalability, reliability, and uptime. The Microsoft® Exchange Server Analyzer Tool queries the Active Directory® directory service for the name (cn) of each directory object that has an object class of msExchExchangeServer to determine whether there is a match for the user-specified Exchange gateway server.

The cn value is a string that contains the short name of the Exchange Server computer.

If the Exchange Server Analyzer cannot find a cn value match for the user-specified Exchange gateway server in the Active Directory, the Exchange Server Analyzer displays an error.

This error indicates that one of the following conditions is true:

  • The user-specified Exchange gateway server does not exist in the local Exchange Server organization.

  • The user-specified Exchange gateway server was incorrectly entered.

To address this error, verify the specified Exchange gateway server was entered correctly and retry the operation.

Warning

If you incorrectly modify the attributes of Active Directory objects when you use Active Directory Service Interfaces (ADSI) Edit, the LDP (ldp.exe) tool, or another Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) version 3 client, you may cause serious problems. These problems may require that you reinstall Microsoft Windows Server™ 2003, Exchange Server 2003, or both. Modify Active Directory object attributes at your own risk.

To verify the server name (cn) value

  1. Using ADSI Edit or a similar tool, locate the server object in Active Directory.

    The CN attribute can be found at:

    CN=Configuration,CN=Services,CN=Microsoft Exchange,CN=Organization,CN=Administrative Groups,CN=Administrative group,CN=Servers,CN=Server.
