Mailbox Cache Size set to zero

The Microsoft® Exchange Server Analyzer Tool reads the following registry key to determine the setting for the Mailbox Cache Size value:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeIS\ParametersSystem

If the Exchange Server Analyzer finds the Mailbox Cache Size registry value set to 0, an error is displayed.

Exchange Server allows size limits (quotas) to be set on mailboxes. Quota settings are stored in the Active Directory® directory service and Exchange Server periodically reads the information in Active Directory to determine whether any changes were made to these limits. The Mailbox Cache Size value controls the size of this mailbox cache. The default value is 256 MB. When set to 0, mailbox cache is turned off. Setting this value to 0 is not recommended because it causes the Directory Service Access (DSAccess) component to perform more Active Directory lookups. Additionally, setting this value to 0 can cause the Exchange store to fail, and can cause failures when moving mailboxes.

To correct this error

  1. Open a registry editor, such as Regedit.exe or Regedt32.exe.

  2. Navigate to:

    HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeIS\ParametersSystem

  3. In the right pane, locate and delete the Mailbox Cache Size value.

  4. Close the registry editor and restart the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service for the change to take effect.
