How to Set the Diagnostics Logging Level for MSExchangeTransport Categories to Field Engineering

 

This procedure explains how to set the diagnostics logging level for MSExchangeTransport categories to Field Engineering. You would execute this procedure to enable the logging of trace level events in your SMTP service, to help determine the cause of a message flow issue.

Before You Begin

Before you perform the procedure in this topic, consider the following:

  • Field Engineering degrades server performance. It should only to be used under the guidance of Microsoft Product Support Services when troubleshooting complex transport issues.

  • This topic contains information about editing the registry.

    Warning

    Incorrectly editing the registry can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Problems resulting from editing the registry incorrectly may not be able to be resolved. Before editing the registry, back up any valuable data.

Procedure

Set the diagnostics logging level for MSExchangeTransport categories to Field Engineering

  1. Start Registry Editor, and open the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeTransport\Diagnostics.

  2. Double-click the entries for the individual MSExchangeTransport categories, one after another, and set the value to 0x7. For example, double-click the 2 Categorizer entry in the right pane, and then change the value to 0x7.

  3. Restart the SMTP service. Services typically do not have to be restarted in order for the change to take effect. However, when you edit the registry manually, you might have to perform this step.
