Dynamic Distribution Group Properties > Filter Tab

Applies to: Exchange Server 2007 SP3, Exchange Server 2007 SP2, Exchange Server 2007 SP1

Topic Last Modified: 2007-07-18

Use the Filter tab to configure a variety of restrictions for the dynamic distribution group. For example, you can select an organizational unit (OU) in the Active Directory directory service that contains the recipients you want to include in the dynamic distribution group. You can also specify the recipient types to include in the group.

The appearance of this tab depends on whether the dynamic distribution group uses a precanned filter or a custom recipient filter. (A precanned filter is a commonly-used Exchange 2007 filter that you can use to meet a variety of recipient-filtering criteria.) The following filter settings are available for a dynamic distribution group that uses a precanned filter.

Select the recipient container where you want to apply this filter
  • Click Browse to select the OU for the dynamic distribution group. This opens the Select Organizational Unit dialog box. Select the OU you want, and then click OK.
  • A dynamic distribution group contains all recipients that are in the specified OU and any other OUs under it. By default, this OU is the Users container in the Active Directory domain that contains the Exchange server.
Include these recipient types
  • You can have the dynamic distribution group include all recipient types or only specific recipient types. For example, you can create a dynamic distribution group that contains only the resource mailboxes in your Exchange organization.
  • All recipient types   Click this button to include all recipient types.
  • The following specific types   Click this button to select specific recipient types. Clicking this button activates the following check boxes. You must select at least one recipient type:
    • Users with Exchange mailboxes   Select this check box to include user and linked mailboxes.
    • Users with external e-mail addresses   Select this check box to include users that are mail-enabled but do not have Exchange mailboxes.
    • Resource mailboxes   Select this check box to include room and equipment mailboxes.
    • Contacts with external e-mail addresses   Select this check box to include mail contacts.
    • Mail-enabled groups   Select this check box to include mail-enabled groups.
  • To learn more about recipient types, see Understanding Recipients.

The following settings are available for a dynamic distribution group that uses a custom recipient filter.

noteNote:
The filter and condition settings for dynamic distribution groups that have custom recipient filters can be managed only by using the Exchange Management Shell. To learn more about how to use the Exchange Management Shell to create a custom filter, see New-DynamicDistributionGroup and Set-DynamicDistributionGroup.
